I haven't yet asked anyone to design such expensive logos but I'm not surprised it costs this much. Logos are an important part of your blog and if you value the importance of blog branding, many may be willing to splurge on this. It probably isn't the usual demand vs supply that determines the price isn't it?

Nice article. I recently held a contest to design a new logo for my (non-commercial) site. There are plenty of whiz-kids out there who can work miracles with PhotoShop or whatever design program they have.
I held the contest not only through my site, but also through a Windows-based community forum and had lots of great designs to choose from. This may not be practical for everyone, but for someone like me, it worked out great. I have the PhotoShop files, so I can make up my own stationery, envelopes, business cards and so on if need be.
