Ryan EdmundsDesktop themes for Wordpress

Wordpress themes which resemble an actual wooden desk are becoming a trend and its’ easy to see why so many desk themes are starting to pop up. Giving your blog readers a chance to sit down at your virtual desktop is a great way to make your blog more inviting and give it a quirky appeal. Theres always been something about a nice wooden background on a web page and the following designs have made excellent use of that.

Coffee Desk

A desk theme for the IT age complete with wireless mouse, smartphone and even a USB stick. This theme makes great use of a graphical user interface, the coffee cup is an RSS link

Desk Mess

Desk Mess is a 2 column theme that is widget ready and comes with Gravatar support. I don’t know that this desk actually qualifies as messy, though. I’ve never been able to see that much of my desk.

Desk Space

This is the pinacle of desk themes for Wordpress. This theme is adsense ready, FeedBurner ready, has plugins built in for Twitter, Flickr, Recent Comments, WMD Editor, and Shadowbox. Not to mention you have your choice of 3 wood finishes for the background.  It also inserts your gravatar into the polaroid photo at the top of the sidebar.

Oooh, those are really cool! I’ve never seen any of them before. My fav is the second coffee desk since it looks similar to my desk. I’m really digging all these new themes I’ve seen popping up that incorporate real-world items into them.

GREAT, GREAT post! Are there studies out yet that prove effectiveness of these desktop themes? I’m curious to know if time spent on the blog would increase based on the actual ‘theme’ ??

With so many schools of thought on graphics vs. content, it’s easy to get lost sometimes out there….

In your opinion, how important are graphics to a blog’s performance? Do you see a fine line between the 2?

    Thanks- talk soon. Jeff H

  4. Awesome list :D Kanata is definately my favourite… clean and simple, yet great artwork and awesome to look at :)

In my opinion, good content is, above all else, the most important thing. If you don’t have that you have nothing. But a good presentation to the visitor is part of a well rounded website.

I wouldn’t say graphics are so much important as general presentation and design. You can have an amazing looking theme with no images in it at all.

  6. Cool themes Ryan.

    Thanks :)

Hey Ultra, you just reminded me of one of the themes I had in mind when I wrote this.. I wish I could remember where I saw it. It was a theme set on a wooden desk with a coffee ring stain… jeez thats’ going to bug me.

If I find it I’ll post it here.
