George PasswaterWays to Increase Your Creativity

Written by George Passwater from PassWater

At one time or another, we have experienced a lack of creativity. While working on that next blog post, you may find yourself staring at a blinking cursor or blank piece of paper – only no words come to mind.

You sit and think, think, think; with all that thinking, something should come to mind, right? Well, this is not always the case. Sometimes it takes more then just focusing on a subject to get ideas for your next blog post.

Keeping that creativity level up is key to writing good content. Coming up with ideas to write on can be a difficult task for any blogger.

Here are some simple ways to help increase your creativity and help spark those ideas for writing great content.

Change Your Environment

Are you just sitting at your desk staring at the computer screen or a piece of blank paper while trying to come up with ideas? Get up and find another place besides your desk to ponder ideas. Go into the kitchen, the room with that big view of the back yard or even just going outside can lead to ideas that you can put down into words.

Switch Your Focus

Sometimes, the longer you sit and focus on something, the less likely ideas will come to you. Switching your focus to something else, even for a small amount of time, can lead to having ideas pour into your head when you least expect them.

Going for a walk, getting a drink, going to workout, playing a video game or even reading a book are just some samples of activities that can help change your focus for the better.

This is one activity that I have used on more then one occasion. I believe that when you switch your focus, even for a short amount of time, ideas are more likely to come to you. This can be the same as finding a lost item when you least expect it.

Listen To Music

Some say music will help stimulate creativity and ideas. Others say the complete opposite. I am one that agrees with the former.

On more then one occasion of being stumped, after putting on some music, the creative juices start to flow and so do the words. From rock to classical, just about any type of music helps me to get in that focus to break through the creativity block.

The next time you have creativity block, give the above activities a try and see how they may help you. I have used each one of the above activities before when I have had creativity block.

    Hi George,

    Great tips to increase creativity.

It has happened to me in the past, sometimes when I was trying to write something for my blog I used to think and think but ended up with no ideas at all.

I solved this problems disconnecting, I take a break and do other things – exercise, listen to music, take a walk, etc. – and the idea comes up.

Another thing I do is writing down the topic I want to write about, then I break it down into subtopics and break them down into points, it becomes way easier to write a good article.

There are many other methods, but I think the point is not to force your brain to think because you can end up without ideas.

    Thanks,
    ^PV Reymond

Great tips to increase creativity. It happens sometime with me too. I usually take break when nothing comes into my mind and listen to music (FM) too :D

The tips that you give is absolutely right! Even I got the idea when I’m changing my environment. The idea will not comes easily if we just sit at our chair and keep thinking about it. Besides that, I also use Google Alert. By subscribing to them, I will get news updating daily according to the topic or niche that I bring in, then I will use my own creativity to write post to my blog. Maybe it can help others.

there is a great book by Julia Cameron called The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity. in that book she recommends of keeping morning writings inorder to declutter your brain. the way it works is that you do this first thing in the morning before anybody else is awake. write few pages of anything that comes to mind. dont let anyone read it, not even you. this is amazing, it works great. the other thing that she recommends is have a date with your self only once a week doing something that inspires you. like going to a museum, go to the beach, go hiking, anything at all all by your self. this really works for me too.

her book is great, i recommend it.

    Hi George,

I’ve had plenty of times when I’ve stared at that blank piece of paper or computer screen and tried so hard to force something to come out. But… it never does.

Those tips you have a great and work quite well most of the time. I have found that for me nothing stimulates my creativity than a quick PS2 or Xbox game. When I’m really stuck, it works like a charm.
