I could have been more clear in saying that typically shared hosting providers don't allow changes to httpd.conf or access to WHM. It's still possible to get hosting support to make certain changes for you, but then you still have to worry about the memory/CPU load as WPMU isn't fond of sharing this with all the users on a server. @Sarah, you know I would like to see that! It can be run on a standard shared server / hosting account. Of course, once it grows to a reasonable size then you would probably require a dedicated server, but I've just helped convert a site of 300+ users over to WP MU and that's on shared hosting.
