The problem with hiding it is, this is a tactic used widely by scammers not wanting to show any info...therefor many with it, even in legit cases are widely mistrusted.

Is "privacy" the same as the shield thing?

Protection is really a plus, but if companies would like to offer you something for that domain...you may need to put something out there.

I don't have a domain name yet, and would feel real uncomfortable with my home address and phone number being public knowledge.

Having your own company name which is not difficult to set up, plus the PO box idea and skype would be my choice.

I want to be sure that I own the domain plus have something extra to protect against domain theft if the domain becomes successful.

This is exactly the information that I needed. Thank you! I have been worried about this for a year and didn't realize I could protect it. I'm off to look into it right now.

I use <b>'WhoIs Guard'</b> for 2 domains. I have seen a good percentage of sites not using it, specially those registered many years back.
