I was thinking of using the Revolution Tech theme for my site, I don't see where the old themes are available now. Hopefully there is a new theme available that is close. That's cool that they are free now though.

I think I'd tend to agree with you Kevin the Pro Plus plan would seem a better value and no I'm not an affiliate just a very interested bystander as it was my intention to go with a REVOLUTION TECH THEME as soon as I first saw it.
That was about a week or so ago...then I read about Brian and Jason going open Source with a brand new set so I've been chewing my nails waiting for Nov. 1.
Our business website is Oscommerce so in keeping with the open source methodology we certainly agree with their choices. I was sort of concerned however about the term "Transparency" used above?
(not to pick a fight or anything but...)

Whenever anyone(myself included) purchases software open source or otherwise they immediately have an expectation as to the to levels of support they are entitled to. Agreed?

I think that giving someone a superior product out of the box for FREE with a clear understanding of what their support options are "in plain sight" is a heck of a lot better than the retail business models. If you don't need any help or support that's money you won't have to spend, but if you do then you know exactly where to go to get it and what it will cost.
That's not marketing that's plain "Good Business" in my world.

Very good review to Kevin, nice work.

Cheers,

I like the overall fresh appearance of the new releases,- clean lines, subtle & well considered coloring. However, they are clearly very close in design to Rev1 (that's not a bad thing by any means). I said in an earlier post several weeks ago on my blog that I felt there was a commercially driven motive behind the apparently gregarious move to "open source", and that now has been confirmed by the unveiling of the new site at revolutiontwo. I think it's a very carefully considered and extremely clever marketing ploy to release your themes freely to one and all knowing that there will be immense downloading (great for site traffic & it does away with the rampant piracy that is ever prevalent anyway) and knowing that a decent percentage of the folks downloading will fall in love with the features and style and then realize that they need support and so fork out $99 per year whereas under the previous commercial model would only have paid $79 period. I wonder how many folks that can see through the transparency of this are now kicking themselves for not scoring a Revolution1 licence while they had the chance.
Having said that,.. I wish Brian & Jason all the best. You guys have set the standard for others to follow with your design talent.

I was eyeing up the revolution theme when I started my sites earlier this year as a few of them are magazine style - now they're open source I might go back for another look. Thanks for the heads up.

No problem Brian. I think it's a big project. As you know, the previous BloggingTips theme used Revolution and I really liked it so it's good to see templates of that quality being released publicly.

I think this new batch of themes are great. There is a huge downside however, the layout of the RevolutionTwo site itself is terrible! You have to complete 4 or so clicks to just view a live demo of the theme, this is so bad!
