>What’s the problem with a lightbox?

"Overused and abused" part. :) People either don't bother with lighbox or make it overkill. No middle.

Personally I dislike inconsistent interfaces. People often think that they can easily reinvent something, they are flattering themselves.

What's the problem with a lightbox? It's a nice, clean way to present a larger version of your image without too much additional effort. Sure, an individual page for each image would be better but when you have a lot of images, it's just not feasible.

The lightbox is also handy for loading say a login box, or other small 'items' of code which don't really need their own page but can't fit on the existing page. Obviously it can be overused and abused, but the same goes for everything that can improve the presentation of a site.

Is there lightbox haters group available already? If not I should start one. Minimalistic tastes revolt against ajax bling. :)

Hey Danny, as with any off the shelf lightbox script, I'd recommend you edit the CSS (or ideally create a new CSS file and load it after the thickbox.css file) and override the default settings to make yours look less like everyone elses, which includes the next/previous links :)

I think the effect this gives off is very proffesional looking, the only downside is that the next/previous links are pretty small and some people may not notice them.
