Kevin MuldoonRevolution Theme Going Open Source next month

I was in Velencia for 5 days this week so I was unable to tell you all about an announcement which I’m sure will interest all WordPress bloggers. Brian Gardner has made the decision to remove all of his Revolution themes as of midnight October 31st 2008.

Do not fret as although the current themes will be taken off, they will be replaced by a new set of themes, all of which will be released under the GPL License. The commercial version has sold for $99 for a single use since it’s launch but was recently dropped to $59.95. Some existing Revolution owners may be unhappy with this news but they will still get full support and updates for their themes to address any future WordPress features which Automatic may add. Also, I think Brian has done the right thing by removing the premium themes so that existing customers don’t see thousands of other bloggers using their theme.

I think this is great news. The previous BloggingTips design was based on the original Revolution Theme and I was a big fan as the themes are incredibly easy to modify and update and all templates are well commented. This time next month a new set of Revolution Themes will be released for free. I’m sure Brian will release a preview just before the launch and if he does, I’ll let you all know :)

  1. Wow. So he is coming out with a whole new design to sell? Cant wait to see how it looks!

  2. Wow, I wonder if the fact that so many other ‘Magazine Style’ WP themes came up almost immediatley after the initial launch of Revolution had anything to do with it? Those guys from Quommunication hit with theirs seems like VERY quick after revolution came out.

  3. the revolution theme is one of the cleanest I have seen and looks very professional. I am glad I never bought it since it is going open source here soon

  4. Sumesh says:

It certainly is exciting times – Revolution as an open-source theme will be good for bloggers, and also for aspiring designers like myself to know the ins and outs of mag-style themes. And I remember you’d done a good job in customizing Revolution, Kevin !

  5. Joel Drapper says:

I can’t wait! I love those themes so might do something to use them for my blog. Thanks for the news!
