A great blog design is the way to go from the start. The only thing stopping people is that they don't know if they are going to blog religiously, so why then spend all that money on a blog design. I know it's worked for me with several sites. The best I can think of was John Cow. His content wasn't fantastic but the theme attracted me to the site enough to keep me coming back.
