Kevin MuldoonBlogging Tips Newsletter launched

Written by Kevin Muldoon from System0 on August 5, 2008

I am pleased to announce the launch of the Blogging Tips Newsletter. A Newsletter is something I have been thinking of starting for a while so I’m glad I finally got round to starting it.

What will the Newsletter cover?

You might be asking why you should subscribe to the newsletter if you are already subscribed to the RSS feed. This is a question I also asked myself when I first considered the newsletter as I didn’t want to exclude regular RSS subscribers however, at the same time, I wanted to offer something different and unique to newsletter subscribers.

First of all, I haven’t as yet decided on how regular the newsletter will go out though it will likely be on a weekly basis.

The newsletter will include

  • A quick summary of the posts from the last week at Blogging Tips
  • Important news and views from the Blogging World within the last week
  • Updates and news regarding Blogging Tips and the Blogging Tips Forums
  • Rumours, Tips and Links
  • Ideas, rants and funny situations

In many respects the newsletter will be more personal than regular posts on Blogging Tips ie. it will be less formal. With regards to rumours, I sometimes get emailed or messaged about some things which I don’t post about because there isn’t much hard evidence to support it therefore I may include some of these in the newsletter.

The format the newsletter follows may change as I want it to evolve along with the site and along with what subscribers want to see in the newsletter. I do have some ideas for the newsletter already but I’ll post these in the newsletter itself :) I’ll post the first newsletter next week so if there is anything you want included in it please let me know.

How to Subscribe

All you have to do is enter your email address in the form below. I have added 3 other fields, namely name, Blog Name and Blog URL, though these are optional.

Well after 2 hours I’ve had a dozen or so subscribers already. I have been thinking about the format the newsletter will follow. In particular I have been familarizing myself with the ‘Blog Broadcast’ function which Aweber has.

As I said in my post, the newsletter will include a summary of the weeks blog posts. However, Aweber allows you to create this automatically. Therefore I have decided to create a seperate list for this summary.

So basically, when you sign up to the newsletter you will :
    * Get the newsletter emailed when I send it
    * Every monday you will get a report which lists the posts from BloggingTips in the last week

It is incredibly easy to unsubscribe from the main list, from the summary list or from both. All you have to do is follow the unsubscription link in the newsletter email.

Is everyone ok with this setup? I know that some people who subscribe to the newsletter may not subscribe to the RSS feed so a weekly report of the latest posts is something they may want. However, I appreciate many of the people who do sign up to the newsletter are RSS subscribers and read the site on a daily basis therefore they would probably want to unsubscribe from the summary list. This is incredibly easy to do, all you need to do is click on the unsubscribe list - infact, if you don’t want to subscribe to the summary list just don’t send confirm the subscription by email.

What do you think? Your feedback is greatly appreciated :)

I think this is a great addition to Blogging Tips, Kevin :)

I’m looking forward to reading the little tidbits which aren’t posted as actual posts from this newsletter, and have already subscribed.

Just one thing: after clicking on the “Subscribe” button in the post, I was redirected to a non-existent page! However, I did receive the confirmation email for my subscription, so you may just need to fix the redirect link.

Looking forward to receiving my first newsletter!

Thanks for letting me know Amanda.

I know exactly what I did wrong. I created the mobile version of the blog yesterday and by default the plugin lists every single page. This meant that the thank you for subscribing page I created was listed in the page list, which I didn’t want.

So I set the page to private. I was wrongly under the assumption that this meant that you could see the page if you entered the url directly but obviously this isn’t the case. I’ve made it so that everyone can see it and again, thanks for letting me know :)

Yeah, I’ll probably write my first newsletter news week. I’m not 100% what I’ll write but I’ll try and make it interesting and write something which isn’t covered on the main blog.

Nice idea. Just to let you know though, on subscribing I got a 404 error just now. It sent me to /newsletter-confirmation-required/ which doesn’t appear to exist. However, like Amanda, the email came through fine.

For some reason the page was stil lset to private. I double checked it and it seems fine now. You should be able to see the page now. Thanks for letting me know :)
