Like most kids in High School, I had no idea what I wanted to do after graduation. I knew through Mr. Stanley’s grade ten computer class I enjoyed putting together websites, but had no idea how to make that into a career. Neither did the teachers or guidance staff for that matter, suggesting I go into computer programing courses and spend an extra year retaking a higher level of math to qualify. One teacher even told my mother that I’d never make it if I couldn’t pass grade 12 chemistry (becuase we all know knowing your Bore-Rutherford models is key in design)
It wasn’t until I stumbled across Ryan Ford’s profile on deviantART that I had a clue there was a field called graphic design, let alone courses offered in collages for it. Checking into his background I was able to get an idea of what courses to look for based on the program he went too, and began looking around at schools here for something similar.
Ryan’s portfolio was truly an inspiration for me, and through his work I discovered a variety of styles, concepts, and facets of design. I would even say that his style of work has influenced my own style throughout the years. Thanks to Ryan I avoided the dullness of computer programing, and was able to find my way to what I wanted to do after High School.
Check out Ryan’s body of work and hopefully it will inspire you.

You know I’m really a fan of anything minimalist, design wise.
Glad you finally found your mentor/path…too many people I know from years back in school were chasing the prospective dollar via some theoretically great degree…most of which ended up being really irate with the job path they chose after the fact.
It may be cheesy but ‘follow your dreams’ is not a bad way to go. There is generally money to be found in personal passions even if you have to dig a bit to find them.
