Kevin MuldoonGoogle to buy Digg for $200 million

Written by Kevin Muldoon from System0 on July 23, 2008

Digg! The net seems very busy this morning with reports that Google are about to acquire the hugely popular Digg for an estimated $200 million. It’s not a done deal as yet but it does look like it’s going to go through.

It will be interesting to see what Google does with Digg and whether they will integrate the service with Google more. Remember, they didn’t really mess with YouTube after purchasing it so it might not be integrated or promoted on Google with their other services.

Yah… it may not be changed all too much, because some core Digg fanatics would prolly leave if google messed around too much.

What will happen is like we’ve seen YouTube video higher in the SERPs…. i think the same will happen with some digg posts.

$200 Million seems a little low, but I guess they learned their lesson paying out huge for YouTube, and not really knowing how to monetize it.
They would do well to leave alone, as there are a ton of Digg clones out now, and the Digg community disgruntles easily (can you use ‘disgruntles’ as a verb).

Wow, Google is getting its hands on everything at this point! I doubt they would do very much with it because of its popularity.

Hope it’s not gonna loose it’s user friendly environment and get stuffed with ads. Just visited MySpace for the first time in a couple of years and I was shocked to see all the ads everywhere. Didn’t feel like the same place. If that happened to Digg then I don’t think I would use it anymore. I really hope they leave it be.
