This is a great post, I hate seeing websites that are filled with countless ads, especially when they don't even advertise anything!

I would recommend not placing any distracting "advertise here" ads, as these tend to provoke ad-blindness.

Messages such as "advertise here" should be placed in a way so they don't distract the user from the real ads.

I would also recommend to keep ads to a limited number, to get the best results. A lot of ads placed to close to each other is just ineffective.

Yes I'm aware of that however that wasn't the problem. If I remove the default banner only one ad is shown and it breaks my other ads to the next line. I tried several different things with it and everytime using one ad messed about the rest of my ads and made all of their alignments mess up.

hey Kevin, nice post. If you'd like, you can hide our default "advertise here" banner by changing the value of the JS variable ShowAdHereBanner from true to false. This will hide that spot. We're going to add the ability to choose from the advertise here banner or a text link below the ad block in the future because of this post. thanks!

I completely agree. And you’re correct that when I hit up a site with too much free advertising space I have a tendency to believe that the site doesn’t do well thus doesn’t sell much space.

As someone who has ad space on their site, I must say that most of the time it’s just easier to have affiliate banners on the site and if you have the right affiliate networks, they’re good to find things to blog about which in turn could bring in more money.
