You might already know that I’ll be writing on social sites like stumbleupon, sphinn etc. for the next few weeks on every Saturday. Before reading this post and also the other upcoming posts, I recommend you to read my last week’s post on 3 things you have to do before submitting a post to a social site.
In every social site, having many friends and fans is one of the main factors that have direct effect on how popular you are going to be on that site. There are many ways through which you can get friends in stumbleupon. But getting fans is tougher. So what is the difference between a fan and a friend? It is simple. If you have added a person and he/she has added you back, then you both are friends. If you add the person and he/she doesn’t add you back, then you are that person’s fan and vice versa.
So how do you go about getting more than 100 fans?
1. Stumble More And Review More
2. Concentrate On Lesser Categories
3. Submit Posts From Popular Blogs
1. Stumble More And Review More
This is one of the many obvious ways which you might already know. Stumble more doesn’t mean you have to spam the site. It means that you have to stumble quality posts that really need votes. If you feel that you cannot come across many quality posts everyday, visit the other popular social sites and go through their popular posts. Read the posts and give it a stumble. A review will put our profile in front of many people when they see the post in stumbleupon buzz page.
2. Concentrate On Lesser Categories
It is better if you concentrate on lesser categories. It is similar to blogging. You concentrate on very few topics and write about them. It is also similar to making money online. You cannot try every method that is available to make money online. Choose the categories of your interest and spend time finding posts on those topics and submit it. Not only will you be a seen as a good stumbler in that category, but you will also get fans that have the same interests as you. This means, when you have a post on your blog, it has more opportunity to get to the stumbleupon buzz page, if those fans stumble your post.
3. Submit Posts From Popular Blogs
I know some people will tell you should not see whether the article you are submitting is from a popular blog or not. I agree with them. But when you want to get more fans, you need to do that. This will make the process of getting more than 100 fans easier. The reason behind it is that, the posts on the popular blogs doesn’t need any spreading of word or shout out to get stumbles. Many people read popular blogs and most of them stumble the good articles on the blog. There are more chances for the posts from popular blogs to reach the stumbleupon buzz page than that of the posts from smaller blogs.
Extra Tip: Try To Be The First To Review
This is an extra tip for those who really want to increase the number of fans by two fold. You always have a lot of privilege by being the first one to submit a post to stumbleupon or any site. If the posts you review make it to the buzz page, many stumblers will get to see your profile. In stumbleupon, they have something called “who discovered it”. When you submit a post to stumbleupon first, your profile will be put below it with a small description about you in the right side of the page.
So start stumbling and get many fans as soon as possible. You will read posts about why you should have many fans, how to get the best out them and also give your best to them in the coming weeks. Please share your views on this post in the comments.

Very useful article. I have not previously been very savvy about social networking and still feel a little aprehensive about it. It seems it could become a giant time sink. However, as this article implies, it is a necessary avenue to promote a successful site these days.
One thing I do a lot of is comment on blogs… when I have something to say. So, when I come across a great post I Stumble Upon it. Helps the other blogger and builds my profile with good submissions.
It helps to be the first. You just get more exposure that way. While I’ve only been doing this for a couple of weeks, I can’t tell yet how powerful a tactic this is. Social marketing is a small part of what I do, and I don’t want it to monopolize my time. This is some very solid advice.
Good tips, but what does having 100 fans on SU benefit my blog? I mean aside from the raw number of readers it could potentially draw in what good does it do? Can’t help but wonder because in my experience SU traffic is hands down some of the absolute worst when it comes to converting and building long lasting readership from.
Charles, Glad this article has been helpful to you. Try StumbleUpon and you will like it a lot.
Edward, It’s great that you submit quality posts to stumbleupon and not anything you find. And yes, you should not do this full time. You can do it when you have time or have some time everyday for these social media activities.
Durant, I will be talking about every question you have asked in the upcoming posts. Anyway, I’ll tell few things in short now. Having many fans means your stumbles will drive a lot of traffic to the post. When you become a famous personality in StumbleUpon, people will start submitting your posts more often to stumbleupon. And regarding the conversion, you have to follow certain things in your blog or website to make the conversion rate more. Hope it helps for now.
Going over 100 fans was pretty easy for me. But I’m now stuck at 150 for a few months…
All solid advice. Thanks.
I am curious how Stumbleupon can help my blog? Is it a similar process to Facebook or other social networking sites like that?
I’ve enjoyed reading a lot of your articles. Thanks so much for helping us newbies.

Hi, if you like Stumble, you may enjoy checking out the new Fast Forward button we have been working on.
Compared to StumbleUpon it gives more relevant results based on the page you are on. It doesn’t require registration and it is just 1 more button in your browser, not a toolbar.
Available at http://www.buzzbox.com
It would be great if you can write a review on your blog or just let me know what you think.
Hope you like it.
