My laptop died on me. And my phone, I don't want to mention my inexpensive phone. I'm definitely going to have to upgrade.

Pam - I travelled all over South East Asia a few years ago. At the time internet cafes were everywhere but they were frustratingly slow. Many of the cafes in rural areas had a dozen or so people sharing a dial up connection. I'm sure it's better now but no doubt it's still way behind what we're all used to.

Mike - I had an Eee PC before I bought this one but I sold it a few months ago. The main reason was the keyboard, it was a great little device and I did look at the new Eee 900 because it was so cheap, however typing was a real pain.

That mini HP laptop looks amazing and very similar to the Asus Eeepc. However, I believe the Asus one has much lower stats.

Anyways, I hope one day I would have a "travel kit" :P

What you can't see in this photo is our 13" Elite Group laptop or our craptastic yet oh so reliable ancient Nokia phone. You can see my Canon SLR, my now busted compact 28>300 Sigma lens, a bunch of cables, the bag that holds the Panasonic Lumix, and my ukulele. What? You don't have a ukulele in your travelblogging kit?

We took almost exactly the sane stuff to SE Asia, though we opted to not take the laptop - we had no problems finding Internet cafes, and though it would have been nice to post photos, we knew we'd deal when we got home.

Can't wait to see the others.

David - I had to pay £87 in import tax. I had asked the seller to mark it as commercial sample so that I wouldn't have to pay it but they never did it!

Monika - Boingo looks pretty cheap. Mobile wifi is starting to get cheaper in the UK via mobile phones and laptops but in a few years it's going to be very affordable.

Great post and one I could drool about myself. I'm a bit of a geek myself loving all the cool devices one can take on the road. Despite this I never use the mobile phone (too expensive) to go online with.

So far I always used my laptop and a hotel connection or a wireless connection if I'm lucky at a coffee shop. However, next time I go travel I will have a MacBook Pro that fits into any rucksack (15.4 inch).

I also want to trial Boingo next time I'm on the road. Their plans seem fair and not overly expensive. Coupled with a good plan on the mobile this might just work.
