Show us your blog travel kit

Chris Garrett wrote a post today detailing his portable blog writing kit. I’ve travelled a lot over the last few years so my travelling kit has changed and improved as technology has advanced. I’m a bit of a gadget geek to boot so I love reading posts like that. It’s great to see how other people get on with their work when they are out and about.

My setup is extremely similar to Chris’s. Chris uses primarily uses a Macbook and a Nokia n95 mobile phone. I use a smaller less powerful laptop, namely the HP 2133. It came out a month or so ago in the States and I got it imported to the UK. Here’s a picture of it (take with my new phone!) :

HP 2133

The HP 2133 is an ultra portable laptop which sports a 8.9″ screen, 2GB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive for storage. The laptop isn’t very powerful and struggles to cope with some CPU heavy tasks. It comes bundled with Windows Vista however it would run much better with XP. For simple tasks like blogging, browsing, emailing and uploading files, it’s perfect. The best thing about this laptop is the keyboard. They have managed to fit a fantastic keyboard which is 92% the size of a regular one. Quite remarkable when you consider the size of this thing. It’s much easier to type on the 2133 than it is on my Asus G1S laptop and that has a 15.4″ screen! (if you want to read more about this laptop please read my review here).

N82Whereas Chris uses the Nokia N95, I decided to go for the Nokia N82 when I got a new phone a few weeks ago. I was seriously considering the N95 as a few of my friends own it and I was impressed with it when I used it. In the end, the additional flash camera on the N82 swung it for me as I wanted a phone which I could use to take photos on holiday.

Both these phones use the same software and features wise they are nearly identical. The phone integrates perfectly with the web and you can automatically upload your pictures to Bebo, FaceBook or whatever in a matter of seconds. My friend has his setup so that he uploads any picture he takes to his Flikr account after he takes a picture. The phone does have wifi on it however entering text on a phone is never practical so the laptop will be used for most blogging tasks. It’s good to know I can connect to the web with or via my phone if the situation arises. I also have skype, msn messenger and gmail setup on the phone but to be perfectly honest I haven’t used them much as yet.

I always plan ahead when going away for the weekend and most hotels have Wi-Fi so the laptop will be used for blogging 99% of the time when I’m travelling however my phone is a good backup and allows me to easily check my email when I’m out and about.

It has got easier and easier over the last few years for bloggers to work whilst travelling. Many phones come equipped with 3G, wifi, megapixel cameras and other features which allow the blogger to update and maintain their blog when they’re on the road.

I’d love to see what other bloggers use to blog when they are travelling. Please leave a comment and let us know what you use to blog when you travel.

If any bloggers want to post about this on their own blog please leave a link to the post in the comment area and I’ll do a roundup next week :) :)

* Kudos to Chris Garrett for inspiring this post :)

    Nice Kev.

How much does it cost to import the laptop!!

I am in need of a new one. Mine has died in the last couple of days.

  2. Great post and one I could drool about myself. I’m a bit of a geek myself loving all the cool devices one can take on the road. Despite this I never use the mobile phone (too expensive) to go online with.

So far I always used my laptop and a hotel connection or a wireless connection if I’m lucky at a coffee shop. However, next time I go travel I will have a MacBook Pro that fits into any rucksack (15.4 inch).

I also want to trial Boingo next time I’m on the road. Their plans seem fair and not overly expensive. Coupled with a good plan on the mobile this might just work.

  3. David – I had to pay £87 in import tax. I had asked the seller to mark it as commercial sample so that I wouldn’t have to pay it but they never did it!

Monika – Boingo looks pretty cheap. Mobile wifi is starting to get cheaper in the UK via mobile phones and laptops but in a few years it’s going to be very affordable.

What you can’t see in this photo is our 13″ Elite Group laptop or our craptastic yet oh so reliable ancient Nokia phone. You can see my Canon SLR, my now busted compact 28>300 Sigma lens, a bunch of cables, the bag that holds the Panasonic Lumix, and my ukulele. What? You don’t have a ukulele in your travelblogging kit?

We took almost exactly the sane stuff to SE Asia, though we opted to not take the laptop – we had no problems finding Internet cafes, and though it would have been nice to post photos, we knew we’d deal when we got home.

Can’t wait to see the others.

That mini HP laptop looks amazing and very similar to the Asus Eeepc. However, I believe the Asus one has much lower stats.

Anyways, I hope one day I would have a “travel kit” :P

  6. Pam – I travelled all over South East Asia a few years ago. At the time internet cafes were everywhere but they were frustratingly slow. Many of the cafes in rural areas had a dozen or so people sharing a dial up connection. I’m sure it’s better now but no doubt it’s still way behind what we’re all used to.

Mike – I had an Eee PC before I bought this one but I sold it a few months ago. The main reason was the keyboard, it was a great little device and I did look at the new Eee 900 because it was so cheap, however typing was a real pain.

My laptop died on me. And my phone, I don’t want to mention my inexpensive phone. I’m definitely going to have to upgrade.
