Kevin MuldoonBlogRolled - Another place to sell text links

Written by Kevin Muldoon from System0 on May 29, 2008

BlogRolledThe other day I talked about a new place to sell banner ads called BuySellAds. Today I want to talk about BlogRolled, a new text advertising marketplace which is aimed at bloggers.

What is BlogRolled?

BlogRolled is a text link marketplace where bloggers can buy and sell text links. The difference between BlogRolled and other text link services is that links have to be specifically placed in the BlogRoll of your blog. Text links do not have the nofollow tag attached to them so PageRank juice will be passed.

The thinking behind BlogRolled is that Google will not scrutinize any links which are in your blogroll. I’m not sure if this is entirely true. If the site listed in your BlogRoll is related to your blog and it remains there for a long time then I doubt Google will do much about it however ads on Blogrolled are sold on a monthly basis and with a maximum of 10 links to be sold on your BlogRoll theres every chance the links there will change on a weekly basis.

In my opinion BlogRolled is doing nothing new at all and they are simply marketing to those who will believe that they have found a hole in Googles ranking system. They say that because you had links manually Google cannot tell the links are sold but most text link services like Text Link Ads use server side code so that links are generated in plain HTML so whats stopping text link publishers simply placing all their paid text links under the header BlogRoll?

Marketing spin aside, whats Blogrolled like? Well, to cut a long story short, BlogRolled is not ready for launch. I came across the site today via John Chow. I’m sure they contacted JC to ask if he can tell readers about the service but after signing up I was unable to find any advertisers listed, not one!!

I was unable to find any blogs using their search tool. I also clicked on every tag they had and did not find one site.

Clearly the service is not ready for launch.

Overview

I was debating with myself whether to post about this new site today after John Chow and The Blog Herald posted about it however since many BT readers also subscribe to these blogs and since neither of them even mentioned the fact that the service does not even have any blogs listed yet I thought I should (The Blog Herald post comes across as if the author didn’t even bother signing up to the site to check it out).

I’ll stress that this post is not a review. It’s crystal clear this site is not ready so it’s not fair for me to say whether the service is good or bad. However, I’m curious as to why they would start promoting a site before even getting some private bloggers and publishers in, isn’t that what a beta stage is for?

Shawn - Can you tell me why you started promoting the site before getting some publishers and advertisers on board first? Im confused why you would launch a service which isnt ready.

To be honest, I didn’t do any promotion other than announcing the launch on my SEO company website and blog. The blog is new, so I didn’t expect much traffic (if any) from that initially. I didn’t contact John Chow or the Blog Herald, but I obviously appreciate the publicity. We had over 200 publishers sign up for the service on the first day, and we expect that number to grow quickly.
