Twitter is a fantastic service and really makes meeting new friends and contacts easy. More importantly, it makes keeping in contact with them a breeze. You can keep the Twitter website open on your browser all day however a Twitter Client is a much better way method of using the service. Desktop Twitter clients operate the same as other messaging systems and they will give you real time updates via pop up windows, the same way msn messenger or skype pops a window up when you have a message. There are also many clients available which integrate with your browser.
If you use Twitter, I encourage you to try out one of the Twitter clients listed below. I’m sure it will improve the Twitter experience for you. Enjoy
* Note, many Twitter clients use Adobe Air. Depending on what client you download, you may have to download it for the client to work.
Twirl is one of the most popular Twitter clients. It’s available for both Windows and Mac and works with a variety of other Twitter related services including FriendFeed, TweetBurner, TwitPic and TweetScan.

The Twitter gadget from Google is an add on for Google Desktop. It’s pretty basic and currently still has a lot of bugs. If you use Google Desktop then it’s worth checking out, otherwise, you would be better off trying a client with more features.

Available to Mac, Windows and Linux owners, TwitBin is a plugin for Firefox 2.0+. I installed this a few weeks ago and it’s pretty handy. Tweets appear in a sidebar at the side of your page so you can still work away as normal. You can change how often messages are refreshed (from 3 mins to 45 mins) and you can switch it off and on using the TwitBin icon. If you’re a FireFox user, it’s worth downloading

The oddly named Spaz is a desktop Twitter client which is available on Windows, Mac and Linux. The utility has a lot of features and is incredibly easy to customize due to it’s coding from Javascript, XHTML and CSS.

Available on Mac and Windows, Tweetr is a great looking Twitter Client. There are alternatives with more features however it’s still worth checking out.

The Twibble desktop client is available on Mac and Windows. It allows you to add multiple profiles and even lets you see where you’re Twitter friends are via google Maps.
They also have a client for Mobiles which works on all Smartphones which have Java installed.

Available on Windows, Mac and Linux, Pwytter has been translated into a whopping 14 languages : Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Romanian, Serbian, Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian.
It’s a pretty basic client and doesn’t have many features though International users may be interested in trying it out.

The following clients let you use Twitter on your mobile phone.
Another good Twitter Client worth mentioning is Twitterrific. It’s a good looking Twitter client designed specifically for Mac owners. Unfortunately, the script is not free, Twitterrific will set you back $14.95.
Overview
Twitter Clients really improve the Twitter experience. I recommend downloading a few scripts to see which one suits you.

I was using Twhirl for Ubuntu but it crashed today and is now refusing to restart. I could probably reinstall it but after reading your post I decided I would Twitbin a try. So far so good.
Great post!
By the way… my new Twitter account is in need of follows (hint to any readers)

Twitterific is free, albeit ad-supported. Every now and then you get an inline ad from The Deck. They are very unobtrusive, and you can delete them if they truly bother you.
John is correct; Twitterrific can be used for free too. I’ve been using it for months and the ads don’t bother me. The $15 will make the client ad free for those wishing to avoid the ads.
I like Twitter4Skype; it means I don’t have to have yet another client open all the time. Their website seems to have disappeared, but you can join by sending a chat to “twitter4skype” like this:
/account
your twitter id
your twitter password
I wasn’t aware that Twitterrific was free(albeit with ads). I dont have a mac so I wasn’t able to try it out
Well, not a client. Twitterfox, a firefox plugin makes easier to update and retrieve tweets
you forgot about twitterfox!
Twhirl… whats this? I have never heard of this and don;t know the uses too. But still want to learn about this and would like to use it and enjoy the benifits.
I use cellity Tweeter from my Nokia mobile phone. Works well…. no problems at all.
I use Yakkle to read my tweets and create new statuses. I was using it as my IM client since it has built in voice and desktop sharing and now it has built in Twitter support. It supports lots of timeline viewing and caches more than 20 friend timeline posts so that I can go back and forth through any that I may have missed!
I have not yet used Twitter much more.
thanks for the list. let me check which client suits me.
