Kris LarsonKeep up with your blogs while keeping your cool

You’ve taken the plunge and started a second (third, fourth or fifth) blog. Now the challenge is maintaining multiple blogs without letting any of them die of neglect. So how do you do it?

Schedule your time
The simplest way is to create a posting schedule and stick to it. First, write down each of your blogs and how often you’d like to see them updated. For professional blogs, this will be easy, as your clients will generally require a specified number of posts. For personal blogs, of course, you can use your own judgment. Remember that if you’re maintaining three or more blogs, posting daily on each one is unrealistic unless your posts are very short and simple.

Map it out
Once you know how often each blog should see you in a week, map out your posting days and times. I use my desk calendar for this, because it helps me to have my schedule available even when my computer’s not on. You can also use e-calendars like Outlook, which can be set to pop up a reminder when it’s time to post.

Bank your posts
By scheduling your posts you’re not scheduling your inspiration. You can write a post whenever you have an idea. Then just “put it in the bank” — in other words, save it as a draft to use when you need it. This will help you in those brain-dead weeks when you can’t think of a single thing to blog.

Have fun
Remember, whether you’re writing personal blogs or professional ones, this should be fun. Blogging is one of the most enjoyable ways I know to express myself, and professional blogging should be no different. If you’re feeling stressed or exhausted all the time, you might need to take a long look at your blogs. Blogging should enhance your life, not take it over!
