Susan GuneliusDon’t Forget RSS Awareness Day on May 1st

Written by Susan Gunelius from Women On Business on April 21, 2008

Most bloggers are interested in increasing the number of subscribers to their blogs.  It makes sense: more subscribers = more loyal readers = more links = more page views = higher rankings, better advertising and more!

While bloggers understand the value of RSS, many blog readers do not.  That’s why Daily Blog Tips decided it’s time to educate the masses with RSS Awareness Day on May 1st.

To help spread the word about RSS Awareness Day, Daily Blog Tips is hosting a contest with a variety of prizes to bloggers who write about RSS Awareness Day on their blogs with a link to the special RSS website Daily Blog Tips created to teach visitors about RSS or publish the RSS Awareness Day badge or banner on their blogs before May 1st.

I think this is a great way to increase subscribers to blogs in the long term.  Educating the casual blog reading audience about the value of RSS is a great way to try to capture some of that audience who would be unlikely to subscribe to blogs otherwise.  I think bloggers talk so often about increasing subscribers but forget there is a huge chunk of online users who have no idea what it means to subscribe to a blog and how RSS can help them.

What do you think?  Are you participating in RSS Awareness Day?

I am in! I am going to write an article with lots of visual stuff. The RSS day is a good thing. In fact, if we want to attract more RSS subscribers we need more of the readers to know what the RSS is and how to use it!

I wasn’t even aware of awareness day :)

I am now, thanks. There isn’t much that will generate traffic to a blog like the subscribers/readers, so I am glad to see someone trying to make the rss a little more visible.

I never really thought about how many casual blog readers out there have no idea what RSS is and how it can benefit them. I agree that RSS Awareness Day is a great idea and should help both bloggers and blog readers.
