Whenever someone registers a domain, they have an expiry date before which they have to renew it. But few people, either forget or deliberately, let their domain to expire which result in a lot of expired domains everyday. We can profit by registering them in several ways. If it is a keyword domain, you can park it and earn money. If it is a 3-5 lettered domain, you can profit by selling it.

Though there are many domains that expires everyday, we cannot find them manually by typing the names in a domain registrar site. So here are a few ways of finding expired domains:

1. Deleted Domains
Deleted domains is a site that gives you a list of domains that have expired on the present day. This site regularly updates with many deleted domains and they have made it easy for you to find the best one. I wanted to get a 3-5 lettered .COM domain. But unfortunately, there weren’t any yesterday and today. There were a big list of 4 lettered .NET domains but I was not interested in them. You maybe interested in it.

2. Free Web Master Tools
Free Web Master Tools is a site that allows you to search their site for expired domains. They have very huge list of expired domains from which you can find the one that you like and register it. They have many domains that have hyphens. A good domain name that I found today when I was browsing through their site is 0PCT.COM. Though it is not a good domain name and doesn’t have any meaning, it is a rare 4 letter domain name. That is how domainers call it.

Though there are many sites, I found these two to be really good and helped me to find some good domain names. Do you register expired domains that have great values? Which site do you use to find them? Please share it in the comments.

I too have been trying to find a nice five letter domain for a long time and unfortunately, did not know of your method. I did manage to find one completely by accident about a year ago.

    CVfox.com

I bought it and didn’t know what to do with it, but thought it was good, because in the UK and Europe (and Academia in the USA), a CV is a Resume. It is short for “Curriculum Vitae”.

I thought that I would use it for some CV (resume) related activity. Then a few weeks ago, a headhunter friend of mine asked me to help him hunt for a software engineer and asked me where he could find free CVs online. So I wrote a couple of boolean scripts for him and plugged it into a custom search engine using the Google API.

I further refined this by using XML about a week later and am continuing to make refinements, but you can see the result on the CV Fox search page.

This all happened entirely by accident, but the site is now getting hundreds of visitors per day - all of it developed almost by accident.

Anyway, it’s the only five letter domain I own, although at the same time I bought another variation of this name CVzilla.com - I have absolutely no idea what to do with it, as I have about a hundred other domains that are better.

Thanks for the tips on the expired domains. Go and check out what I did with mine… I know, it’s a humble thing, but it works - and it was kind of fun to do. (I made the logo with “The Gimp“)

    Morning,

DeletedDomains is a great resource, I also use http://www.domainsbot.com/ as well. Even in 2008, it’s relatively simple to pick up great domain names online.

    Data points,

    Barbara

I hand pick from long lists of expired domains, while registering a few myself, I post many for others to register on my domaining site. Sometimes I even sell them for profit on my other site where I list mydomain portfolio or just develop them. I think it’s just easier to look at expired domain lists, when trying to register dropped domains.
