Kevin MuldoonRevResponse.com - Profit by giving your readers free resources

Written by Kevin Muldoon from System0 on March 31, 2008

RevResponse.comBloggingTips is over a year old now and although I have spoke about adding paid reviews to the blog many times in the past, todays review of RevResponse is the first paid review I have wrote on this blog (I’m sure they’re honoured!). Enjoy the review :)

In a Nutshell, What is RevResponse?

RevResponse is the affiliate site which promotes TradePub, a website which offers thousands of free Trade Magazine Subscriptions & Technical Document Downloads to visitors. They cover 33 different industries ranging from Agriculture to Banking to IT to Sales. Although most of the magazines are lesser known topic specific publications they do also give away free issues of top selling magazines like Forbes.

Payment Details

For every qualified subscription request you generate from your website or blog they will pay you a minimum of $1.50 per lead. The commission you receive depends on the magazine the visitor subscribed too though they have mentioned that some commissions can reach double figures for a single subscription!

RevResponse

In their FAQ they state that you will be paid via check approximately 45 days after the end of the month in which your account totals $50 or more. 45 days after the end of the month is terrible in my opinion. I’m not sure what is causing them to hold back commissions so long but as it stands just now, If I generate lots of comissions tomorrow (which is the 1st of the month) and manage to make $100 in comissions, I wouldn’t get paid for it until mid June.

From looking at their blog and their forums it looks like they have a very responsive support team and on March 27th they announced that affiliates can now be paid via PayPal so I had hoped that the 45 days after the end of the month would be reduced to a week or two at most. Unfortunately this is not the case. I contacted RevResponse to clarify the waiting time for payment via PayPal and the 45 days after the end of the month rule remains. Quick payment is something I put a lot of emphasis on personally so I was disappointed by all of this.

Ad Formats Available

RevResponse offer you a variety of ways of promoting the magazines to your readers. Their ad wizard offers you the following options :

  • Banners - Available in the following formats : 120×240, 120×600, 160×600, 250×250, 300×250, 336×280, 468×60 and 729×90. All of these banners are available in the following colors : Black, Blue, Dark Blue, Green, Orange, Purple, Red, White & Yellow.
  • Simple Text - A simple text link or small paragraph with links to the magazine is available.
  • Flash Widget - The flash widget shows both the magazines and the downloadable content readers can get. The smaller sized 120×240 flash widget does squash up the info a bit much in my opinion though.
  • Email Newsletters & Mailings - The solo mailing option is pretty good though would probably convert better if integrated with your newsletter (you can see an example of this mailing here).

RevResponse Ad Wizard

The code generated for the ads is styled via CSS so you should be able to change the colors from the default options and even expand the banners to suit your site’s design if necessary. The banner options are kinda plain looking so I’d probably use them in conjunction with a recommendation for one of the magazines of downloads.

Co-Branded Site

One of the best features RevResponse offers affiliates is the ability to promote a co-branded version of TradePub. This allows you create the illusion that the tradepub magazine store is part of your website ie. your co branded site matches the look and feel of your design. All they did with the BloggingTips store is create a header and footer which matched this blog’s design however this simple method is really effective and it blends the store with your website really well.

RevResponse Co Branded Site

You can view the bloggingtips tradepub store at http://bloggingtips.tradepub.com. As you can see, the visitor would not even realise they had left your website unless they checked the URL in their address bar.

OverView

RevResponse is a concept I like as it allows you to make money by offering free resources to your readers. I don’t believe it is suitable for every website though as most of the magazines will probably not be relevant to your readers. However, if you can find 1 or more magazines or downloadable content which is relevant to your reader’s you may be able to make a lot of money and keep your visitors happy at the same time.

The long wait for payment is something which I consider to be a big negative against RevResponse so I’m hoping that they will reduce this in the future. They are still relatively new and as I mentioned before, their support team seem very responsive to the suggestions from affiliates so fingers crossed it’s something they will address.

I encourage you all to sign up at RevResponse to see if there are any resources you could offer to your visitors. If you find a good magazine which is focused on a similar topic to your blog then I’m sure you could make some money relatively easy from RevResponse.

Thanks for your take on our program, Kevin!

Just an FYI about our Net 45 payment terms, we know that this is an area for us to improve. We recently made the cut to 45 days after the close of the month. Historically we were paying 60 days after the close of each month. You’ll see us continue to make progress here and we understand the importance of timely payments in the affiliate landscape.
