Guy, you are so right. I recently raised my rates for sales copy writing -- by 30% -- not a blip from clients so far. With the advent of the web, there's just no need to write for free.

Arwen -- excellent point. If many more freelancers would spend time writing articles FOR THEIR PORTFOLIO instead of for some $2 slave wage driver, they'd be making money that much quicker.

And finally, Jean, nothing like a daily blog to keep those writing muscles honed. Like anything else, if you don't use it (the muscle, talent, brainpower, etc.), you lose it.

Thanks everybody for chiming in.

Blogging indeed makes our writing better. And you can in fact start writing online in freelance positions. Please find information on that here.

This article came at a perfect time. Thank you so much. I agree that those cheap jobs end up costing you more in the end. The time you spend doing the work could've been spent looking for higher paying gigs.

Here's a funny thing. When I started trying to get work, I offered to do it for free, just to get future references. No takers. A friend suggested that I charge at or above market rate. I thought he was crazy, but work started rolling in. The important thing to remember is that the clients tend to associate the quality/value of your work with the price you charge. Just a thought.
