Long Tail SEO Keyword Targeting Tips

The wonderful thing about blogs is that they are such naturals for long tail SEO keyword targeting. Many blogs are already niche in focus, so they are born to target those long tail keywords. When you then get down to the level of an actual post page on a niche blog, it can be almost effortless to go after the long tail. Here are some tips on long tail SEO keyword targeting.

Long tail was a term coined in Wired Magazine in 2004, and it refers to targeting several smaller, niche markets instead of the most popular, highly competitive markets.

Here’s an example.

This post could target those who search for the term, “SEO.” The problem with that tens of thousands of people search, “SEO” monthly, which means there is way too much competition for that search. Odds are good this post will get buried in the search rankings for a search for SEO, but it could instead to well with several less-searched phrases, such as:

  • long tail SEO
  • SEO keyword targeting
  • keyword targeting tips
  • long tail SEO tips
  • SEO targeting tips
  • long tail tips

You get the idea. Instead of targeting one uber-popular keyword that is extremely competitive, the idea is to target a series of less popular phrases.

The nice benefit is that people who find this post by searching, for example, “long tail SEO tips,” will be more content when they arrive at this post. If they just searched SEO and found this ranking first, they might instead be seeking information on SEO services or even just a basic definition of SEO.

The long tail is also a nice way to build traffic for newer blogs. Long tail keyword phrases have a lot less competition, so it’s much easier to rank well in search engines and build a following.
