Mani KarthikAre you satisfied with your blog?

Written by Mani Karthik from Daily SEO Blog on February 26, 2008

This is one question that bothers every one. Now that you have setup a great blog, a great domain and a great theme, where do you find readers? Are you on the track that you had seen yourself when you started your blog?

Finding readers to your blog can be frustrating and sometime even de moralizing. There are friends of mine who have told me that they’ve been thinking of quitting the blogging scene simply because they haven’t got any reader base.

It is very normal to feel frustrated, especially for young bloggers when your efforts are not fruitful. There are two problems to this case.

1- What are your expectations?

2- What is your effort?

When you started your blog, what were your goals? No, I’m not talking about the money making part. I’m talking about the goals that you didn’t tell anyone about. That you had kept close to your heart.

What were they? To get popular? To become an Internet celebrity? To become a blogging guru?

Try to find answers to these questions. Don’t think about the monetary gains. Pick up these questions and see if they are possible. Measure as to where you stand at it.

Many bloggers start with the aim to make money but it’s a truth that all of us want to be called the “AdSense Expert” or the “Money Making Expert”. And to an extent it is possible, if you find a niche for yourself that is. Ex: The AdSense Expert in Tunisia, The Money making guru in Tobago and the like :)

So the point I’m trying to prove is that, young bloggers tend to get carried away with the existing “money making experts” around and start their journeys only to find that it’s not possible as easy as you thought. Let this not be.

I blogging, it’s the passion that should drive you not the money part. See what your “ultimate” goals and what your heart desires, ad work towards it. They would be smaller goals and easier to achieve.

Believe me it sounds silly, but this is truth. I always wanted to be like Darren Rowse and Rand Fishkin. Although I didn’t make it, I managed to get Darren Rowse to comment on my blog thrice. Which is something that I’d celebrate myself. It may not be anything at all to others but for me, it’s an achievement.

So my advice to young bloggers is that, don’t lose heart following un achievable, untrue targets. Get realistic, find your strengths and do ONLY what you can. Follow your little dreams and as they are achieved, you’ll feel proud. The honors will come in slowly.

For now, I can say that I’m satisfied with my blog. It doesn’t have a high PR but I still enjoy updating it. I agree with what you’ve said that it is really important that you need to have a passion on the topic of your blog.

Thanks Mani for the wonderful post!

As a new blogger with little experience and writing skills that have a long way to go, I’m not totally satisfied with my blog. I don’t yet have the technical skills that I need to do all the things that I want to do, but I’m learning. For me, if I can learn something new everyday and take my blog one step closer to where I want it to be, that is very satisfying. I’ve been fortunate that my readership is growing daily and this gives me an extreme amount of satisfaction. Even having an extra 2 or 3 unique visitors over the previous day is a step in the right direction. Inch by inch I’m making progress and that’s all I can really ask for.

Being realistic can really make the difference between discouragement and satisfaction. Setting realistic goals right from the start is the key. Even if you determine that you want to have 50 more visits every week, though it’s a small number, it’s realistic and achievable. I would love to see 1000 visitors per day, but with only 1 month behind me, I realize this won’t likely happen and I’m fine with that because I didn’t go in with those kinds of unrealistic expectations.

    Thanks for the encouraging post.
