Susan GuneliusFlugpo.com: Social Networking with Classified Ads

Written by Susan Gunelius from Women On Business on February 18, 2008

This weekend I received an invitation to a social networking site I haven’t heard much about.  This one is called Flugpo.com and it’s promoted as MySpace meets Craigslist.  It seems as though new social networking sites have to come up with unique ways to differentiate themselves to draw new users.   Flugpo sounded like an interesting combination of functionalities, so I checked it out and decided to give it a try.  I signed up and started my new account then spent a few minutes browsing through the site.

My first impression was that it looks very much like other social networking sites although a bit simpler without the bells and whistles of Facebook but less business-like than LinkedIn.  It includes the expected group and business networking opportunities as well as options to upload and share pictures and more, but what made me curious about Flugpo was the addition of classified ads like Craigslist.

When you register for a new Flugpo account, you choose your region so you can see the most relevant ads and information.  Sounds great to me.  I use eBay and Craigslist to buy and sell things ocassionally.  With the increased rates on eBay that skyrocketed recently, I think people would be willing to try new alternatives (particularly one like Flugp that is free).  Flugpo users can also provide testimonials about their experiences with other users, which would be an added feature above and beyond what Craigslist offers.

That’s where my interest ended.  At least for my region, there are no active classified listings other than real estate.  I think Flugpo sounds like a great idea.  Adding a classifieds section like Craigslist to a social networking site seems like a good fit.  However, Flugpo has been around for awhile, but the activity still seems very low.  Perhaps that’s just in my region though.

Have you used Flugpo?  Is it more active in other regions?  What do you think of the concept of Flugpo?

Hi Susan, the concept of a MySpace meets Craigslist sounds both interesting & promising but…

I popped over to take a look and right now it doesn’t seem to have much activity in any region. I guess time will tell.

I have too many websites, blogs & social networks in my life to get involved with something with minimal traffic or activity. Later…

I have been a member of flugpo for several months. I have found it to be useful. The part I like the most is that it is a very friendly community. Unlike my experiences with MySpace or Facebook, the people at flugpo are genuine and sincere (I can’t vouch for every member but the majority).

I do freelance work and have landed several projects from people that viewed my profile and contacted me. I think that just like any site, you get out of it what you put in to it. The site has really taken off lately. The amount of ads has skyrocketed so it must be catching on.

I actually love flugpo! I have been a member for awhile, but the whole time I was a member they were in beta. They just went “live” a week or so ago and the site is really seems like it’s starting to get alot of traffic. I think in a few short months your experince in terms of the classifeds should only improve as they get more robust.
