Love your blog: a Valentine’s Day post

Of all the potential Valentines out there, only one is always here for you, always interested in your life, always seeking your attention: your blog. (Also, your dog. But they don’t pay me to write about dogs here.) This Valentine’s Day, forget all that nonsense about restaurant reservations and trashy lingerie and take a moment to focus on the true love of your life. Say it with me now: Love. Your. Blog.

Dress it up pretty
Take a moment to study your blog with a stranger’s eyes. How is it looking these days? Is it still wearing that tired color scheme from when you first met it? Does it continue to sport those tacky, flashy, early-nineties ads, simply because you haven’t bought it anything nicer? Check out its links: do they lead anywhere, or do they need toning up?

With a little time and effort on your part, your blog can easily be prettified until it looks shiny and new. And as its new face earns the admiration of many strange eyes, you’ll become more interested in it as well, updating more frequently simply because you are so proud to be seen with it.

Take it somewhere nice
When was the last time you took your blog out? I mean out on a proper date, not just tossing the URL into a casual email between friends. Just like any significant other, your blog will get tired and depressed if it never enters a new venue. This Valentine’s Day, consider showing your blog off a little more. Use social networking sites and shared publicity to introduce your blog to the world. Don’t be afraid to let your blog be seen. Though many will admire it, it will always be true to you alone. (Unless you sell it, but that’s a whole different post.)

Spice things up
Look back over the past few months of posting. Are you noticing a trend? Maybe your posts are showing up less and less frequently. Or maybe you’re in a rut, posting about the same old subjects or in the same old format every time. Remember, variety is the spice of blog. To keep your relationship with your blog happy and healthy, you need to shake things up a little. Set posting goals for yourself and promise your blog you’re going to stick to them. Try to vary your style and subject matter, if possible. If you’ve followed the previous advice, you’ll probably be inspired by your blog’s clean new look and wider readership, but if not, don’t despair. Use books, movies and music – any creative works – to spark your imagination. Don’t be afraid to try writing something new. In no time, you and your blog will return to those first, heady days of posting passion.
