What Blogging Taught Me About Life

Posted by on 20th Jan 2008 Blogging 10 comments

I’m heading towards my third anniversary as a blogger. It was slow going at first, but I learned some important lessons about blogging and about life.

  1. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. People who read blogs are a fickle bunch. If your blog sucks they won’t stick around. If you put forth the effort to provide a quality resource, they’ll respond.
  2. If you’re wrong, people will tell you you’re wrong. And it’s not always pretty. If you’re claiming to be an authority on a certain subject, you better know your stuff.
  3. Controversy sells. Nothing brings in the masses like controversy. If you’re going to blog on a controversial subject you best have thick skin and be prepared for the backlash.
  4. Good things take time. Popular blogs don’t happen over night. While there have been cases of instant success, for the most part it takes time and patience to build up a successful blog. Blogging isn’t for the “get rich quick” crew.
  5. People are good. After working in corporate America for almost 20 years, bloggers restored my faith in humanity.

What lessons did blogging teach you about life?

Controversy can easily drive page hits. It's a much tougher process to develop an audience without casting stones. I still have to ask myself as I write, are the people who want to rubber neck an argument really my audience. Great blog!

Controversy does sell but I see enough of it on the news channels. Thats why I love reading blogs, yes there are some controversial ones but there are far more blogs that are very useful.

Blogging has taught me to reach out to an audience. People have stumbled on to my blog and then I've built a relationship through email with them.

The blog is just the platform, but the real magic comes from connecting with people and helping them and making a difference.

the most greatest and truthful point in your article is 5th one.Blogosphere is like home for us.And they seniors teach you so much that if you learn it from else where it would take years.

people in the real world are amazed that other bloggers guide me to earn even though they are in the same profession.

when i tell them this they tell that they are misguiding you,but every time it works and then there mouths are shut.

so i would like to congratualte you on including this point in your article.would like to learn something from you as well if you permit.
