“How do I promote my blog?”
Man, if there’s one question that gets asked about as much as “How do I make money blogging?” it would be that one. For some reason, people simply refuse to believe that great content is all you need for your blog to succeed. They keep thinking there is some magic formula that will generate traffic for little to no work.
Well, guess what? There is a formula! But… it isn’t magic. And… it takes work. But the formula is proven to get results. You are just going to have to get over the fact that you never get something for nothing. Stop wasting your precious time and energy scanning for a “free lunch.” There are two kinds of people in this world: those who know better, and suckers.
Nobody wants to acknowledge this formula. Nobody wants to admit to it. Some bloggers bring it up from time to time, Like Maki or Skellie, and everyone just nods their heads, as if to say, “Mm-hm. That’s nice.” And you can tell they’re still hoping against all reason that the magic no-work formula exists.
Alright, enough messing around. What is this non-magic, hard work formula for blog promotion?
Well, it isn’t blog promotion.
Wait… what? Yes. That’s the secret. It isn’t blog promotion at all. Successful blog promotion is really due to something else entirely. And I can tell you what it is in a single word: giving.

I bet I just lost half of you right there. After all, there’s nothing special about that! That’s fine. The rest of you, keep reading if you want to know how and why. You see, the people that have abandoned this post were, in spite of everything I just said, still looking for the magic no-work formula that doesn’t exist. You who have remained are looking for realistic practical methods that work. And that’s what giving is.
Now, when I first started writing this, I was going to say that it isn’t blog promotion, but self-promotion. And even though that’s closer, it still isn’t “it.” Self-promotion is promoting yourself instead of your blog, and so by extension your blog benefits. But self-promotion is still too… well, selfish. It’s counterintuitive, but what works the best is the opposite of selfishness: giving.
I can give you some examples from my own life that bear this out:
There are even more I could think of, but this post is getting long enough as it is.
So that’s my big secret to blog promotion. It isn’t even blog promotion. No magic. Requires lots of work. Sorry to disappoint you with such mundane un-tactics. If you want to keep chasing illusions, there are plenty of internet marketers to dangle dollars in front of you.

I throughly enjoyed the article Michael. I totally agree with your message about how blog promotion is all about giving. The more favours you do for other bloggers and other people, the more likely they will be encouraged to look at your blog. The other advantage is that these people become your biggest fans.
Yes, I totally agree, there is nothing gained in life without helping others along the way.
Providing great content, tips, tutorials and resources are a great way to help others.
I am involved with a Networking business and help people all the time. I help them fix their blog, keyword research, article ideas, fix plug ins, finding the right server, any other problems they may be having etc.
Building relationships is the key.
I totally agree with what you’ve written, so far this is the greatest tips and information I’ve read about promoting a blog.
Thanks!
What is the mailing list you mention? I would be interested in joining it, both as someone who can answer the occasional question as well as add my own question here and there.
Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
@Jamie: the list is called wp-pro and you can sign up for it through Automattic, Matt Mullenweg’s company, which is the parent company of WordPress.
I really enjoyed this post, Michael.
I’ve only been running my own blogs for about 4 months now, and I am definitely learning that giving turns into receiving. I think that’s really what is meant when people say, “It’s who you know,” but the meaning of that phrase gets misconstrued as, “Only those who already know people at the top can get anywhere,” which is totally discouraging. Maybe what that phrase really means is, “Get out there and do something helpful for someone else.” And bam! Now you know someone!
Thanks for the great post!
You nailed it, Michael. It’s very difficult to achieve success in any endeavor without building relationships, even in a virtual world.
Some really great tips there for anyone in blogging. I think you got it quite right that blogging is highly dependent on relationship building with other bloggers.
Thanks again, everyone. A post about giving in blind faith probably wouldn’t go over too well, but if there is a “secret behind the secret” it is to give with no expectation of reciprocation or score-keeping. You will receive more than you give, but thinking about that in advance kinda spoils it. It’s best if you can just give without thinking about what you might get from a person in the future.
Michael,
This is so true! The longer I blog (it will be one year tomorrow, in fact), the more this truth plays out in my experience. Thanks for expressing it so clearly for those who may not yet be aware of it.
Wishing you the best!
Jeanne
hey mike,
wow, thanks for verifying that very fact about helping others to help yourself…
thats totally true…. for me, My site hasn’t even been endexed by the major search engines simply cause my ISP sucks so badly and won’t allow google to verify it…
but over the last year, I’ve gained over a 1000 new visitors to my site per month http://www.patternstudioa.com just from my own popularity from my fashion groups on all the social networks and my clients that i do my service for….(about 300 people in my files) and these people have more people, and they have more… it’s a snow ball….as well as registering my site on http://www.designersearch.com and others….
you are so right…..
i also; offer help others with sewing and pattern tips, free and then they tell thier people…
my question to you, is what can i do to make my pattern book into an ebook that I can put on my site to sell it… my clients want me to copy it, but that takes so much out of me…. could you help me make it an ebook? Please, and I’d like to add you to my site and tell my people about you.
thanks
dean
Dean, what form is your book in now? And are the pages standard 8.5 x 11?
