Sara Christensen…But I’m a Terrible Writer!

Written by Sara Christensen from Pajama Professional on January 16, 2008

Do you have a blog?

You don’t?

Then what the h-e-doublehockeystick are you doing hanging around a site called “Blogging Tips?” Oh, you are planning to start a blog soon. Really? How long have you been planning that? About as long as you have been dreaming about what the your name will look like on the cover of your first novel. Forget about the fact that you haven’t even written a line of dialogue.

If you are reading about blogging, then you should be a blogger. There is absolutely no justifiable reason why you cannot start blogging immediately. If all that is holding you back is a lack of confidence in your writing, then get over it.

I’m not sure if you are a very good writer. In fact, you might not be. But if you have something to say it doesn’t much matter. The blogosphere is a great place to learn the writing craft. If you have interesting ideas and are pleasant to other bloggers, you can pick up a lot of feedback and assistance.

I’m not advising you to just slap some words together and hit publish. What I am saying is that if you have always loved to write and you are willing to work hard at it, then blogging is the perfect place to start. And this site provides everything you need to learn to be a successful blogger.

Well, almost everything. I mentioned hard work a couple of paragraphs ago. While Blogging Tips can teach you the fundamentals, you will need to bring your own commitment. The only person who can make you practice your writing and publish regular articles is you.

Readers are forgiving of new bloggers with shaky writing skills. The key is to show improvement. If you work hard and that hard work begins to show, readers will know they have found a blog worth reading. A blog that is sloppily written from start to finish is not likely to gather an audience.

Just keep that in mind if your confidence wanes. You can always improve your writing skills and by blogging everyday you’d probably have to try hard not to get better. If you think that writing is what you are supposed to be doing, then blogging is a great way to try it out.

And, hey, if it turns out that you really do suck as a writer, at least you can stop wasting your time dreaming about it. Kidding!

Because blogging is fun! I admit that I tend not to read the blogs that are truly badly written, but content can be entertaining and/or informative even when the writing is so-so . . . as long as the blogger’s personality shines through. (Not always easy, of course, but ideal!)

Good point, Deb. In addition to getting off our backsides and doing something that might or might not become profitable, getting active in blogging can (should be) fun.

In addition, in spite of all the great help that’s out there (inclyding blogging Tips, of course) nothing or no one can actually do it for you. You will learn, and grow, by doing.

Some of my own writing today really displeases me when I go back and see what I wrote yesterday or least week … but then wjhen i look at stuff I wroyte several years back, I can see a great improvement … practice is the only way to actually get better.
