Not all bloggers are professionals keeping at it 8 to 10 hours a day. For some it’s a hobby, for me it’s a way of life. I talk to a lot of bloggers about blogging and though we do have the blogging things in common, most of our days couldn’t be more different. Here’s my typical blogging day:
- Wake between 4:30 and 5:30 to get some computer time in before my guys wake.
- 4:30 - 5:30 - Email - There are generally a couple of hundred emails to go through. I sort them by subject, then answer the most pressing right away.
- 5:30 - 6:30 - Check all blogs for comments in moderation, delete spam, respond to comments. Check my editorial calendar and plan posts. Start researching celebrity news items.
- 6:30 - 8:00 - Wake the guys. Get them off to school and work. Exercise.
- 8:00 - 11:00 - Begin posting to Celebrity Cowboy which will need constant updating throughout the day. I spend a couple of uninterrupted hours researching and reporting celebrity news at this time. I also like to post a discussion topic to Freelance Writing Jobs before noon as many of my readers stop by during their lunch hours.
- 11:00 - 12:30 - Take off my blogging hat, put on my mom hat and meet the kindergarten school bus.
- 12:30 - 3:00 Run errands, drop The Boy at activities. If my son isn’t home I blog for Simply Thrifty, She Plays Music or one of my other blogs. Also update Celebrity Cowboy some more. If my son is home, we find some very cool things to do.
- 3:00 As my son does his homework next to me at my desk, I check comments on my blogs or respond to emails. The rest of the afternoon is spent doing mindless computer things. Answering emails, responding to comments, social networking. Since I’m spending time with my son, making dinner, doing laundry or other family stuff, I’m not heavily blogging at this point.
- 7:30 to 9:00 and beyond - Continue blogging. Update the Celebrity Blog, check emails and comments and update various other blogs.
As you can see, it’s the celebrity blog that takes up most of my time, but I don’t mind because it’s a lot of fun. Since school isn’t a full day until next year, I have to find several blocks of time to blog instead of one uninterrupted day. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have a great job and a great family and get to spend time with all.
So now it’s your turn. I’d like to invite you to tell me about your blogging day. You can tell me in the comments or on your own blogs. Do you only blog for an hour or two, or is blogging your life? Can you work uninterrupted or do you have other things to attend to?

Oy! I blog most of the day and can’t seem to pull myself away from the computer. In fact, I’m blogging right now. On a good day I can manage to budget my time so I spend a certain amount of time writing posts, commenting on others’ blogs, revising my blog’s appearance and workmanship, and maybe even working on my actual web site, FeeFiFoto.com.

Thanks for the post, Deb! I follow your Freelance Writing Jobs blog daily, and appreciate this breakdown of your work day. Here’s mine:
8-9am - read in bed to get my mind warmed up
9am-12pm - check and reply to emails, troll job boards for postings, fire off responses and follow ups to responses I’ve sent out earlier in the week, check my blog stats for the previous day, visit my favourite writer’s blogs
12-2pm - lunch break with my guy (who also works from home), errands (groceries, banking, cleaning, etc.)
2-6 - post on my blogs, check and reply to emails, check out more blogs
6-7 - dinnertime
8-10 - more blog posts, reply to emails, attend an event I’m covering if there’s one going on
11 - unwind with my guy till we peel ourselves off the couch and go to bed
*A few days a week I squeeze in a long walk in the afternoon for exercise.
