Kris LarsonThe holiday juggle

Sometimes you wind up having to blog on a holiday. I, for example, have a Thanksgiving deadline today for which I am totally unprepared. Fortunately, I am always happy to hold myself up as an example of what not to do, so learn from my mistakes and never, ever do the following:

Wait until the day of your deadline to post your work.
As I try to post this, my internet connection is experiencing small technical difficulties, probably because all my neighbors are using my bandwidth to surf the web and ignore their extended families. Whatever the reason, it’s briefly down, and that means my carefully-constructed plan of posting my piece early this morning and then heading off to bury my hands in turkey butt is already failing.

Plus side: I may have an excuse to keep my hands out of the turkey butt.

Don’t bother to learn the technical aspects of the blog until you need to.
I used to know how to do a time-delayed post in Word Press, but a few weeks ago I somehow forgot. Today, this means I need to either post before I’m supposed to, or get up from my early family dinner at 3:00 p.m. today to post. Or, in theory, I might learn how to work this. But don’t be like me, kids: learn every aspect of your posting software early, and if you are the kind of person who randomly forgets stuff, take notes.

Plus side: I may have an excuse to get up from my family dinner.

Make a lot of jokes about hating your family on an important family holiday.
I actually love my family, so this is doubly cheap on my part. Yes, “hateful family” jokes are an important tradition for holiday-themed blog posts, but I urge you not to follow my example. Because you never know when your great-aunt is going to randomly get a computer and learn to use Google and find what you wrote about her. Believe me when I tell you, this can happen.

Plus side: I do not have a great-aunt, so I am totally safe.

Good post and good reminder for us all with the tear end holidays approaching too.

One thing to remember regardless of great unts or not … aAmericans in particular often make comments about family in jest that would shock folks in other cultures … it’s always better not to talk bad about family, even if there’s no chance family may be reading … the ‘Net is international and some humor doesn’t translate well.
