If the investment seems to big for them, they can always share the cost with few others so that it will not be that expensive. If given the choice to go back, I still think that starting a blogging journey with a self-hosted domain will be much more better. Anyway, if anyone is going for the free services, go for Blogger.com. I guess it is way better than Wordpress.com in terms of the blogger's control span and the ability of monetization.
