The #1 biggest topic on the internet today has to be “How do you make money online?”. Everywhere I go I find bloggers blogging it, readers asking it, and it seams to be a vicious never ending circle, of unknowns. The fact that it is so talked about, actually takes away my interest in covering the topic. I enjoy writing about new gadgets, sharing new information, but when it comes to making money online, every answer has been written hundreds maybe even thousands of times, you just have to find it.
There are a lot of deceitful people in this world, that would lead you to believe they hold the key, or the infinite wisdom to the power of money, usually they don’t. As you have probably read before many marketers make money selling you the products they say will teach you how to make money. Sometimes you have to look behind the makeup to see the real face, and it may not always be as attractive as it is perceived.
I am so far away from being rich, it isn’t even funny, actually it sucks. I would love to tell you that I make thirty-thousand dollars a day, doing nothing but playing games on the internet, but I don’t. Maybe in another life! However, what I can do is make money when its needed. I can make an extra hundred bucks, on a Saturday, so that I can take my kids out. So lets start with that, and work on being rich anther day, because little profits are better than no profit at all.
Idea #1
This weekend I made an extra $120 dollars, doing nothing. How, Ebay! Friday night, I loaded up a couple of auctions on Ebay for some website templates I already had purchased in the past. In about 10minutes, I designed a listing, figured a price, which was $19.97 and listed them on Ebay, Buy it Now with 10 available. Since I wanted to see what I could make in a hurry, I only set them to run for three days, this allowed more exposure in a shorter period of time. Had I listed these in a seven day auction, I most likely would have made nothing this weekend, because they would be so far back in the results nobody would find them. I also loaded these up to my server, and setup Ebay’s Digital Delivery feature, which means that upon sale the buyer was directed to the download, without any work on my part. So this was a very easy $120 bucks, and an idea anyone could use to make money.
Idea #2
Last Sunday on BloggingTips, I wrote a quick article on how I made $69 with affiliate marketing. I did not go into a lot if detail about how I did it, but here you go. I very quickly setup a pre-made template, one of the ones I just sold on Ebay, on my already existing server space. The product, ringtones, because they are very popular right now. I found an affiliate, added their links to the templates, and bought a traffic package on Ebay for about $5. I also already owned the domain, so this saved me about $7 – $10.
Now I will be the first to admit that the traffic packages you can buy on Ebay, tend to be low quality, and few orders, but you can get one here and there if you have the right product, and a page that converts well. If you are looking to make tons of money with affiliate marketing, you will most likely need to look into ppc advertising, to increase traffic and sales. Be careful with ppc campaigns, they can get very expensive quickly and many first timers tend to lose everything, without any experience.
Anyways that was it, a quick template, resources I already had, and $5 worth of low grade traffic, made me just under $70 in one day, with minimal work.
What You Could Consider Doing
Be creative, sometimes looking at what others are doing can be the worst thing for you. It may cause you to focus on that market/idea alone, when instead you should be saying how can I make this work for me, or what else are people interested in. Your mind is only as creative as you allow it to be, and don’t let your fears of failure hinder your ability to succeed. With both ideas above we are talking $5 – $10 investment, which in the larger scheme of things are very minimal, for the potential return on your investment.
Don’t believe everything you hear, a lot of marketers are only making money on the product they are selling not the “secrets” inside. Always check your sources out. If John Smith, releases a new tell all ebook, run a Google search on John Smith. Sometimes you don’t need the book to find out what he is actually involved in. I once did this and basically discovered the guys entire business structure, what he writes, where he sells it and how long he has been doing it, not to mention his age, real name, what highschool he attended and where he lives, which by the way it turns out he wasn’t as rich as he was claiming, not even close. So always verify your information sources, because its amazing what Google knows about people.
One Last Quick Ebay Tip
Many sellers list everything with 7 day auctions and sit and wait, when in reality most auctions don’t do anything until their last few days. So I tend to string auctions out to keep a constant flow of activity. In other words, lets say its Sunday since it is, I will list 10 3day auctions, 10 5day auctions and 10 7day auctions, which means I have activity all week long, by spreading them out. This has always performed better for me.

I consider myself to be pretty ebay savvy so I was surprised to see you say something that I didn’t know, which was your last tip. I never thought of that really but it makes perfect sense. I would love to get in on that other too. Hmmm, I’ll have to look more into my affiliates. Using their links in your own auctions didn’t violate any kind of TOS?
Lori,
Thank you, I am glad you were able to get something out of this article. But I do want to point out that I did not use the affiliate links, through the templates on Ebay, that would be against TOS. This was simply an affiliate marketing plan outside of Ebay that I used to make a little money. I wish you could use affiliates, in your auctions you would make a lot more money

This website has a great value added feature that can be used by some people selling their items on ebay.

Nice article with some sound, practical advice … so much better thna those “wait six months for your PR to go up” useless bits.
I’m a virtual Bay “know nothing”, aside from using it exstensively in the past to buy products for my former “brisk and mortar” business, but I have read that the aution timing makes alot of difference. I would suggest you _don’t_ want to start 3 day autions early in the week, for example …because there is often a 30 or 40% increase in the wining bids for like items with auctions that end Sunday evening US time versus those that end on week nights. Or am I off base on this thought?
