Angela had a good point yesterday when she mentioned how new Bloggers are more concerned with things like how their Blogs template looks rather than having any content. If you worry about each and every detail before you start writing content, your going to burn yourself out around your 10th post. The best advice I can give any new blogger is, don’t over complicate things. Its really that simple. You are creating something for other people to read and enjoy. Its not a fashion show or a contest. Its something that should be enjoyable for both you and your readers.
Here are the beginning steps you should take when you start blogging. Once you get past these then you can start working on other things.
1. Pick your Topic - What niche topic are you interested in. Pick one that you know a good amount about and feel you could write about daily or even multiple times a day. Remember that the more focused the miche the harder it is to come up with new content.
2. Buy your domain - You could use a service like blogger or Wordpress.com but if you are at all serious about blogging you will want your own domain. Make sure you have complete control of your domain. Don’t buy your domain through your web hosting company. They will make it hard for you to transfer if you decide to use a different host later. Use a domain registrar like Dotster or GoDaddy.
3. Buy Hosting - There are several great hosting companies out there but it is one of the most important decisions you will make starting out with your blog. Read Kevin’s article on What you should look for in a hosting company. One suggestion I would also make is try and find one that uses Fantastico. This is an application installer that automatically installs web apps like WordPress. Its not hard to manually install but when there are updates it allows you to make the upgrades with a single click. This is really handy if your going to hosting multiple blogs.
4. Install your Blog Platform - Like I mentioned above Fantastico will install Wordpress and a handful of other blog platforms, create the database and do everything else for you.
5. Start writing - You are now a blogger. So you can now start writing. Once you have a consistent schedule or at least several posts you can start on customization, marketing, social networking, and all the other cool things that you will do as a blogger.
6. Have Fun - Finally you should enjoy what you’re doing. You will find that when you really enjoy something you are usually more successful at it.
