I personally think a 3-column theme is better.. and i use a 3 column theme for my site because of better distribution of your widgets etc.

I always go with a minimalistic kind of approach. 2 Columns Wordpress themes are the way to go for me! Now on the way to get my own blog with wordpress!

I am currently using a 3-column theme and except for the images width i find it pretty good.

I’ve been kind of batting around the idea of a blog that’s 2 columns at the top and three columns at the bottom, with the big column splitting into two somewhere around the middle of the page, for obvious advertising reasons.

Anyone know an easy way to do that?

Don’t forget there are one and four column themes as well. I settled on a four column theme at OpTempo, a modified version of Sensible Blogging.

One columns are great for photo and video blogs but might be tricker to monetize than 2+ column themes.

Fluid CSS’s can also provide more flexibility to themes as well. I use a 2 column fluid layout on my software development blog to make code examples easier to view.

I’m currently developing a new theme for my blog and I’ve gone with a two-column layout, but the right column is wide enough to accommodate all of the information and advertising that I need it to.
