Yes, some people do go to church, but the majority does not. As such, seeing christmas related is a strange concept. It is about gifts and eating - and even more: free time off work. Now Halloween on the other hand is something new in Germany (though the area I grew up actually has a trick or treat like tradition for new years eve) but I very much like it.
