Kevin MuldoonGoogle finally updating PageRank

After 6 months Google are finally in the process of updating the visible stats of websites PageRank. This is the longest wait between updates since Google started.

This is good news for those with new blogs who missed the last update (including this one) as you will probably get a PR today or in the next few days however many of you will be disappointed to see that your PR has dropped. BloggingTips has achieved a PR4 however several of my other sites have had their PR dropped by 2 or even 3 points.

As has been pointed out by a lot of bloggers recently, these PageRank penalties could be a blessing in disguise as it means less emphasis on the rank which will remind everyone they should be concentrating on blogging! However, a lot of ad agencies are still using PR as a major factor to determine ad rates so whilst I agree with the above, I also know that this update will be very important for a lot of bloggers.

Thanks to Mani, Monika, Etienne and Elina for bringing this to my attention in yesterday’s post (and Ryan who emailed me about it).

So what PageRank did you all get?

My blog dropped from PR5 to PR4. Obviously penalised (or Google have changed how PageRank is calculated) because I have a hell of a lot more quality links coming in to my blog compared to the last update.

Most of my other sites stayed the same (PR5), although one site I launched between the updates went from zero to four, which is what I expected.

  2. Kevin says:

Jame – I think what’s most likely is that the blogs which have been linking to you have had their PR reduced therefore the PR they are passing to your blog is less :)

  3. Jamie Harrop says:

Good thinking Batman! That never crossed my mind, but it makes perfect sense. :)

  4. Shawn says:

I went from a PR0 to a PR2. I was hoping for at least a PR3, but 2 is better than nothing

  5. Rajab Bader says:

Congratulations Kevin! My blog has got a PR4 too.

  6. Jw Bobbink says:

some of my websites have gained more then +3 PR  My personal website went from 0 to 3 !

  7. Ramkarthik says:

I have got a PR5 for me new blog which is nearly 3 months. Im happy about it. And its sad blogging tips got 4 when it was expected to get 6.

  8. Elina says:

My mommy blog dropped from PR4 to PR2. I’m soooo depressed. On the other hand, my make money blog went from PR0 to PR3. Guess in a way, it balances out. Problogger claims that Google is penalizing us for selling links on our sites. Not that I am willing to take down my text links (unless it is the advertiser’s request), but I would like to know your opinion about this.

  9. talia says:

Huh. I thought that the whole page rank thing was history, thanks for the info!

  10. Thank you Kevin for the mention.
My blog went from 0-3 and a new one which is a JV blog of mine went from 0-2 in 40 days. I’m quite happy with that.

My 25 days old blog went from PR0 to PR4. It was just as I expected. I am not excited about it just because I dont place a lot of emphasis to it.

  12. Wayne Liew says:

It came and go. Although it gave me a PR4, it is nothing that is worth the celebration for me, there are too many PR4s out there.

  13. Kevin says:

Elina – Well we are now in the situation where we know that selling text links can hurt our rankings so the decision is up to the owner.

  14. Arstan says:

As I understand Google did it in two batches, I guess the first one was manual updates and the second is more or less automated. My blog got from PR3 to PR4 with the 2nd manual update.

Kevin congrats with PR4!Keep up the good work!

  15. msolution says:

I agree with Arstan, i also saw a two phase thing! bought a domain in june, went PR0 in August, and now is PR3,…. though inside pages have dropped from PR0 to PR-1 … so just not happy.

  16. Kelby says:

My http://www.typeamom.net site went from a zero to a PR4 on the homepage, so I was pretty pleased. It is new, and this was the first rank update since it launched. Luckily, none of my other older sites took a hit at all. Whew!

  17. Franki says:

PR have not changed at all for me. Also, I don’t tend to place that much emphasis on PR anyway, so makes little difference eitherway…

  18. Michael says:

After 6 months my PR is the same as before which I don’t understand because I did a lot of linkbuidling in this period.

  19. MSN hacken says:

After a lot of months my pagerank didnot increase at all. So I don’t know why not?

  20. MSN hacker says:

My pagerank increased at the moment I din’t work on it. If it was I would like to prefer some other good linkinig factors for increasing it. Still it will be green and better I hope.
