jblantonHow do you combat the block?

Written by jblanton from Success For Your Blog on October 25, 2007

This is something that everyone experiences, and thus has to deal with from time to time? I’m talking about writers block. Its that period of time where our creative juices just aren’t flowing. You feel you have something to say but you just can’t get the words out. Everyone has their ideas and ways of getting around writer’s block. Lets see how many things we can come up with, leave your suggestions in the comments.

I’ll get this party started with giving you some of the things that work for me.

Forget about Blogging - Go off and do something else. Spending time with your family, go for a walk, watch TV, clean the house, anything other than blog. This helps me clear my head and when I return I have a new set of ideas.

Read - Read my favorite blogs, read some email or even read a good old fashion book. This almost always sparks new inspiration and gives me a new fresh idea to write about. Reading about news in your niche is also a great way to get ideas. For example yesterday there was a flood of articles regarding the Google PageRank update. This gave practically every Blogger out there something to sound off about.

Write about what others are writing about - Having writers block also has its opportunities. The opportunity to go out and find great articles in your niche. You can then elaborate on the idea or gather up a few articles and provide a link roundup.

Now that I have gotten things started, lets keep it going. What do you do to overcome writer’s block?

One of my way of combating the block is to pre-write when I have a lot of ideas in my head and if I really don’t have contents in my stocks any more, I will only go out to hunt for blog topics.

On your point, writing what others are writing about is a good point but I guess we need to evaluate the topic before blogging about it. I first see many big boys yesterday started to blog about Google Page Rank demotion by showing the before and after Page Rank of famous sites. Then, many smaller blogs start to blog about the Page Rank demotion using the same method.

This makes a frequent bloghopper like me to be sick. We can blog about the similar topic but maybe in a different approach. I can see about of big boys followers nowadays. I don’t say that my contents are totally fresh but in terms of big news, it will be good if you read and analyse before blogging about it in a better perspective.

I like to go to the gym. It gets me away from the pc and more importantly, I always feel more awake and alert afterwards. I seem to be more productive after going.

When I don’t feel like writing, I do something else. The most productive activity for me is reading. Not blogs or internet articles but good old fashioned books where I get a lot of leads and information not available on the internet. Due to the “rich” subject I write about, I am fortunately never short of ideas. But when I am in the mood to write, I make sure I do a few posts whilst the going is good!
