Mani KarthikAn open letter to Google

Written by Mani Karthik from Daily SEO Blog on October 24, 2007

Not again Google! I mean..why do it all the time? Give us something to cherish and look up to you guys. Seriously, this is going too far!

First it was the “selling links” issue, now it’s a PR downgrade you are gifting us. Come on!

Haven’t you guys got better things to do like protecting your credibility by doing something about the splogs and scrapers? Ah! No, don’t tell me you are working on it. Why don’t you prioritize that to a PR update?

Do you know that bloggers like us spend time and energy writing good articles for readers and one find day a smart ass who can cheat you with his scraper software, steals away with our content? And you do nothing about it, but rank him higher than us for the keywords. How interesting is that?

Today, many popular blogs have reported that their Google Page Rank have gone down. And we can’t think of one good reason why this happened overnight. See the entire list at Daily Blog tips.

Is it because we sold links earlier? Come on, yea we did it but not anymore (after you guys warned us that is). Darren was asking if it’s because he took off Adsense units form his blog? :) You do have a responsibility to answer him isn’t it?

Whatever, your explanation is, I don’t think you’ll be ever able to give us a fair answer. Because, what’s happening now isn’t transparent. You have still time to regret. So please restructure your algorithms for an unbiased grading system.(If you want people to take PR seriously that is.)

Meanwhile, any chance of getting hold of the sploggers I mentioned earlier?

You’re right, it definitely seems like they could be spending their time taking care of the people that are stealing content and spamming, etc…

I wrote a similar post few days back, Google is not punishing the splogs and instead running adsense on them. How are we supposed to make money when we our content gets robbed.

If you want a number 1 listing in Google all you have to do is open your wallet. AdWords will allow you to advertise your BLOG for any keyword phrase your choose.

I prefer to do what I want with my BLOGs rather then rely on trying to please the Google Monster.

Not that I agree with Google is doing, only that I choose to do something about it rather then complain.

    Peace,

    Michael

Do they want us to take PR seriously? Whenever I hear anyone from Google discussing PR it always seems like they downplay its importance. Especially the 3+ month old data from the toolbar.

I’m not too concerned about a PR decrease as long as they keep on sending the traffic.

As a resident voice on SEO, I can’t help but weigh in on this one.

My working theory isn’t that all of these sites have necessarily been penalized, especially considering many of them are doing nothing wrong. Rather, I believe that the sites linking to them have been largely devalued.

Consider this: The primary audience for many of these sites are bloggers. These sites derive their popularity from others who are quite likely being penalized. Now that the algorithm has been changed and all those links have lost their juice, the popular blogging niche sites are losing PageRank as a byproduct. It’s regrettable, but largely unavoidable.

one things for sure, google has certainly stirred up a lot of debate with this :)

It seems to be that PR is not the internal method by which Google ranks pages anymore, though it may have been at one time. Seriously, stop fretting over it everyone.
