I have a couple of sites in which the Google PageRank is just one point apart, but the page view traffic is dramatically different. There’s one simple reason for this. One site is newer, and one site is older. So one site has far fewer articles, and the other site has hundreds of articles.
This may sound obvious, but if you are looking to boost traffic to your blog or site, the secret is elegantly simple: write more. Consider every new post or article to be a new portal for visitors to find your site.
You can obsess over things like PageRank and incoming links and search engine rankings. You can fanatically study your stats. You can socialize in the blogosphere, and go nuts with self-promotion and submissions to social bookmarking sites. You can play with widgets and tinker around with your design.
That’s all fine to do, but it should really be an afterthought. It should be something done in the stolen moments between creating quality content. In essence, if you write it they will come.
Here are some tips to help you boost the content, and as a result the number of keyword phrases you can target and the number or doorways into your site:
- Set one day a week aside to all those other non-content-creating endeavors. That way, you won’t be so easily distracted from creating what is the heart and soul of your blog: the words.
- Create a schedule for creating content, and set goals. Everyone’s schedule is different, so determine how many posts or articles you can create in a given week. Give yourself deadlines, and stick to them.
- Have some fun brainstorming. Take the basic topic of your site, and think of five potential topics. Take each of those topics, and think of five even more specific angles. You can even do a little keyword research to see if there are ideas there. For instance, if your blog is about cell phones, figure out what all the related keyword searches are that are popular. Then use those as a basis for brainstorming more topics.
- Keep your master list of story ideas handy so that you can turn to the list when you get blogger’s block. At least one idea is bound to inspire you.
- Try to write a little every day, even if you don’t finish an entire blog post. Just set a certain time of day aside to write, even if it’s just 20 minutes in the evenings.
If you keep creating the content, and you’re mindful of search engine optimization as you do it, you will see your numbers steadily increase. Just keep on writing!

While I have no doubt about the importance of quality content, I disagree with the "if you write it they will come" idea.
Unique content can be a good way to create and maintain a loyal readership, but if you want your site to rank for any meaningful keywords, relevant backlinks still win. Even if you have the most beautiful content nobody will ever find it unless you promote it and get some links.
In my opinion content and promotion are equally important for new/small blogs.
