I've always found the best way to get google coming back to your blog as well as it being unique is to update it regularly which (if it's a personal blog or something your passionate about) you should be doing anyway.

This topic lends itself to controversy because most blog writers create their personal blogs from pure passion, which is something they should be writing with at all times. On the other hand, you always need to get your blog out there in competition with the millions of other sites that deal with the same subject matter as your blog site does. You have to write with certain keywords in your content or you might as well be writing your blog on an old typewriter and then throwing your pages in the trash because no one will ever read your content if Google is never going to promote your blog pages.

You need to be cautious of promoting your blogs only for traffic. If you cross the line your loyal visitors will think you've crossed over. I do agree though you need to have catchy, bold, creative titles. Your content must be rich with well grammar and spelling. Adding a few keywords here and there (maximum of 7?) will also push your blog in SERPs.

It's a fine line to write for both your reader and the search engines. Ultimately your reader needs to make a connection, so I thinking leaning more to the reader is appropriate for a blog.

Rob I agree with you, but I must say that there is a very fine line between writing for SEO and writing for your readers.
