Josh MullineauxWhat Do You Like Most About Blogging?

Written by Josh Mullineaux from joshmullineaux on September 5, 2007

Hi everyone, my name is Josh Mullineaux and I am the author of a blog about business, finance and personal development. I also author ‘Finance Friday’s’ on OnPulse IM.

My Background

I have a background in sales and finance, and recently quit my job at JPMorgan Chase to work full-time for myself. I am currently involved in several online businesses, one of which is Unique Blog Designs. My business partner, Nate Whitehill, redesigned John Chow and most recently, Shoemoney.

Why Do People Blog?

There are many different reasons why people blog. They might blog to earn money, socialize and make new friends, or even for therapeutic reasons.

I purpose the question, “What do you like most about blogging?” Have you ever taken the time to ask yourself that question?

Incredible Networking Potential

It took me a little while to figure out what I like most about blogging and two things clearly stuck out: the opportunity to meet like-minded people and the stress-relief that blogging can provide.

In my experience working in the “real world,” I found it difficult to network with most people. It seems like people who are not online are much harder to get ahold of and less willing to share valuable information. However, in my short time blogging and working for myself, I have met some interesting and similarly-minded people.

As you know, communication on the Internet is much more efficient than traditional forms. These days, through email exchanges and IM conversations, business deals are made.

Most of the people I have come into contact with are not only informative, but also willing to divulge their wealth of knowledge. This is quite the opposite experience from the offline world. In order to speak with or network with an expert in the “real world,” it usually takes a lot of money. Thankfully, this is not true online.

If you are interested in networking with a certain person online, a simple and respectful e-mail to that person can do wonders.

Blogging As A Stress Reliever

Blogging is a big stress reliever for me. It is therapeutic being able to write down some of my most pressing thoughts. It also clears my mind and helps me organize my thoughts. Sometimes if I have not thought something through fully and I write it down, it becomes crystal clear. Communicating concepts to others can help clarify one’s thoughts and theories.

So, what do YOU like most about blogging?

I read a blog recently that says blogging is like gardening. On the whole, it’s completely valueless, and not worth the time, money and effort. Sure, for a few people it’s worthwhile financially, but to most of us it isn’t.

Why we do it is to create something we are proud of. We enjoy doing it and being creative, and for some of us it’s different to the day jobs. You get less out than what you put in, and very few people (relatively speaking) view our blogs. But to us it’s worth it.

I’ll need to find that blog post now :)

You welcome Colin. You subscribed to blogging.com feed right? ;)

Rhys, our blog’s are important to us for different reasons. Your right that we wouldn’t keep blogging unless we thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Thanks Kevin!

For me its the excitement of building something from nothing. you build something people want to read, link to, contribute to. Meeting new people and being part of this whole Phenomenon of blogging. Oh and if I make a little money along the way, then thats cool too.
