Kevin MuldoonWe were blogging before we knew we were blogging

Nate Whitehill wrote a post 2 days ago entitled ‘What Motivated You To Start Blogging?‘. He is asking for readers to send their answers via email or in the comment section of the post. It will be interesting to see how different people got into blogging.

I have been blogging before I even knew I was blogging. When I first started using the internet I used to post on forums frequently, very frequently. My thoughts, rants, questions and answers were being posted on the internet but they were scattered across dozens of forums. Blogging has allowed me to centralise most of these ideas and thoughts in the one place.

I am not suggesting that posting on forums and posting a blog are the same thing however I do think they are very similar. At its basic level both are essentially just a way to communicate with other people on the internet. It’s not surprising that vBulletin are adding a blogging option to their next version of forum software, forum owners have been looking for a bridge with blogging platforms for some time.

I suspect that a lot of people made a similar transition to me eg. went from forum posting to blogging. How did you first get into blogging? If you have the time, I recommend dropping by Nate’s What Motivated You To Start Blogging? post, there’s a good discussion going on.

:)

A bit unrelated, here - sorry about that, Kevin.

I want to install WPCache. My doubt is, will it affect SEO? More specifically, will it change the file type, like from php to html? Or any other problems?

What about when I uninstall it? Will I be affected then?

Dede & I had launched our website about 5 years ago and were maintaining static journal pages to keep friends & family up on our latest happenings and show photos. The move to Blogger was a no-brainer for me, but Dede was kinda resistant. It took awhile, but the light finally did “click” and she started realizing how much easier is it to let the CMS handle the formatting & publishing.

Buxr - Most of the most popular bulletin scripts were called bulletin board systems when they first launched :)

Rob - CMS’s are incredibly useful. Wordpress is one of the most flexible scripts available in my opinion.

TZ - Im not too familar with the script. If the script changes the extension of your pages then traffic would be affected as incoming traffic to posts etc would reach a dead end

Buxr, I’m right there with ya! We thought we were really uptown when we finally had a local BBS that supported 2 simultaneous users!

I remember fondly my old 300 baud modem - that could be dialed back to 150 baud if that was too fast! Of course, that was in the pre-floppy days back when we stored programs (typed in from magazine articles) on audio cassettes…

    Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the mention. I have received a lot of great feedback so far about what people wish they knew when they started. Nice chatting with you the other day and I look forward to our guest blog swap. Talk to you soon.
