Kevin MuldoonvBulletin blog close to launch

Written by Kevin Muldoon from System0 on July 30, 2007

For those who have been hiding in a cave the last 10 years, vBulletin is a PHP bulletin board and argubly the best discussion software available on the internet. I have been using it since around 2001 for building communities. I read about vBulletin building a blog into future versions of their software a while ago but I assumed that it was still quite some time away from launch.

I received an email from them today about the release of version 3.6.8. In the email they noted that

vBulletin 3.6.8 was recently released as a maintenance release to improve the stability of vBulletin and provide compatibility for the upcoming vBulletin Blog addon. The Blog will therefore require a minimum of vBulletin 3.6.8.

You can see a live version of the vBulletin blog here. This news might not interest some bloggers but it is big news for forum owners who have been looking for a good bridge between their forums and their blogging databases. Infact, I upgraded my forum’s blog to the latest version of wordpress a week or so ago but I found it very difficult to integrate the forum and blog design together. Not to mention the fact they both use different databases for member information. This could be the answer I am looking for.

You can see the official announcement from vBulletin regarding this here.

I run a massive Arizona Sports forum (ArizonaSportsFans.com) and we have vBulletin. Before I knew about their blog development, I tried Textpattern, then just switched to Wordpress…

I wonder if vBulletin will give the ability to import content. I really like Wordpress and I can’t decide if I want to switch a FOURTH time (Also not sure I want the blog and forum connected)…but if I do, I hope I can import stuff.

I haven’t tried out vBulletin’s blog yet but at the moment I would still suspect that wordpress is better. However, vBulletin have a lot of top guys in their team so I’m sure it will be tweaked a lot. Plus you will have the added benefit of the blog being integrated with your forums member database
