Wordpress is a fantastic piece of software and is hugely popular. However, its popularity sometimes makes bloggers forget that there are other great blogging scripts and services out there.
Here is a quicklist of wordpress alternatives that you might be interested at looking into if you want something different :
Blog Software
- b2evolution
- boastMachine
- Dotclear
- Eggblog
- LifeType
- Loudblog
- Nucleus CMS
- sBlog
- Serendipity
- SimplePHPBlog
- Simplog
- Textpattern
- WB News
- Wheatblog
- WikyBlog
- ZompLog
Hosted Blogging
If there are any blog scripts i have left out please let me know and i’ll update the list.
Thanks,
Kevin

Great resources to consider Kevin.
Would you be able to tell readers which ones are easy to customize?
For someone with lots of experience in coding to the most entry level person like me. . .

As a long-time fan and user of Serendipity I knew there was life beyond wordpress but I’ve only come across a handful of these alternatives in the past.
In addition to ease of customization it would be interesting to know what the market share is and whether they’re targeted at any particular market.
If all you’re interested in is pre-existing plugins I think anyone familiar with wordpress will be more than pleasantly surprised by serendipity. If you’re developing your own plugins I couldn’t comment having not experimented with wordpress down to that level.

WordPress also does hosted blogging at WordPress.com does it not?
Good article though - it is easy to forget there are alternatives to WordPress.
Just like the rumour that there are search engines other than Google.

Stephen - most blogs work in a similar way for editing themes etc - ie. the design is stored in a css file, so it really depends what blogging platform you prefer.
Jonathon - im a big fan of serendipity. I’ve used it for a personal blog for photos etc for about 2 years now. I also used it briefly for a poker blog.
Martin - yeah i actually had wordpress.com on the list but removed it because i called the post wordpress alternatives. I probably should have still kept it in the post
Pep - Dotclear looks pretty good. Do you use it personally?

grey matter… i used it a couple years ago and recently on a school project. You need to be a little familiar with cgi/perl to install and html to customize it.

There are always an alternative for each and every thing, for wordpress alternative i can say, an internal CMS is the best way, you should have unique designed blog, which will looks great for you.

Hi,
I’m looking for a blogging package wich supports multiple users.
The idea is to build a community of users who can post their creative designs, photo’s, lyrics, songs etc. with one ‘main’ page wich will show eg. the last 10 posts or so and some negeral publications.
I tried WordpressMU but my host does not use Apache.. and joomla just doesn’t seem to cut it.. i can run php and asp(.net), sql4, ms access and ms sql server 2005.. just not apache
Do you have any ideas?
I’d much appreciate it
Thanks!
