Whether you run a personal blog or a topic specific blog one thing should be certain : ‘Blogging Should be Easy!‘.
There will be the odd time when you are struggling with what to write but generally speaking you should not have any problems with coming up for ideas for your blog. If you are struggling for post ideas or have lost interest in your blog altogether then your either blogging about the wrong thing or blogging just isn’t for you.
Blogging Should be Easy
Blogging should never feel like hard work!
- Write about things you care about - If your a huge New York Knicks fan - blog about that. If your a huge film buff, blog about that. You should always blog about a subject you care about.
- Write about things you have experience with - Some people forget that the knowledge they accumulate throughout their lives could be very useful to other people. For example, if you’ve lived in Chigaco all your life travellers visiting the city would find any info you post about it useful. If you know another language, this can also help people. Quite a lot of successful blogs do well because they go out their way to help the reader and solve problems for them.
- Write about something your passionate about - The passion for your subject is reflected in the quality of your post. It’s easy to tell the bloggers who enjoy writing and those who have lost interest and are only blogging because they dont want their blog to die.
Your blogging about the wrong thing if :
- You always struggle for ideas about what to post
- You dont keep up to date with news and events with your blog topic
- Blogging becomes hard work and feels like a job rather than something you want to do
If Blogging isn’t easy
If you find yourself in the last 3 points i mentioned above then you will need to have a long hard think about what to do about it long term. Hopefully you will realise quickly if your blogging about the wrong topic and letting it die won’t be of a major concern to you but if your blog is successful and making money then you need to consider either changing the blog subject (if possible) or selling the blog and starting a new blog about something you are interested in.

Great advice. It is interesting to see how often this sort of advice is given and how many people believe they are the exception. I think most people think the stuff they already know isn’t worth writing about and sit down and try to be brilliant and witty with every single word while writing about words found in key word searches and trying to sound like an expert. What a lot of work! Nice site.

Great post, you should definitely blog about what you like rather than what you don’t.
It helps to generate more ideas too.

It’s too bad they didn’t have blogs when I was a teenager, back then I knew all about weather and astronomy and music.
Now I don’t know as much as I used to, and I’m not as passionate about any subject as I used to be, but back then if there had been blogging, who knows I might have made some serious money.
Now it’s like I keep asking myself what do I know about, or what am I passionate about, and I still haven’t really found the answer.

Totally agree. I’ve always been a stream of thought kind of writer. I then go back and edit after I’ve gotten every last thought out of my head and on paper.

Kevin you are on point again and bringing out great discussion. Mike Lindsey your probably not the only one out there (in here) seeking to find their passion. Welcome.
You are probably good at and interested in alot of things. Hence you are in between choosing maybe.
Writing off the cuff is good too. When you just let your ideas come out your creating a brain storm. Writing will lead to wealth in our age.
Any other thoughts on being stuck for ideas and what you can do to find your passion?

alamster - i would consider myself to be a good speller and grammar but i find that when i have a good idea and the words flow easily i look back and read the post over and there are a few spelling mistakes from time to time.
mike - im sure theres something you are passionate about. Some tv blogs are hugely popular for example.
Stephen - thanks bud. Ideas on finding your passion? Think about something that you are enthusiastic about talking with friends.

I completely agree! I love to blog and I enjoy the challenge of thinking up new and interesting posts. But it would be horrible if I actually struggled with that and dreaded signing on to my blog each day - I really do look forward to it! Really great posts.. Keep up the great work!

I believe that heart should have a bigger decision than brain, too…..
Brain can only persist over heart for a short time….after that, you may have to abandon the blog if you aren’t passionate.

It gets easier all the time as you find success… when no one is reading, it can be a chore if you’re ’stuck’ and can’t think of a topic.
On the other side, if your readership is increasing (or better still, your blogging income) you can become HIGHLY motivated in a hurry to find something to write, and write well.

One thing I forgot to add before hitting submit; write in advance. Some days you just feel more creative than others, so pop out a few articles and save them somewhere in the event you get a horrible case of writers block, or get ill or something… I have three articles ready to go right now, even though I’m just a once daily poster.
