Kevin MuldoonTechnorati Authority Explained

Written by Kevin Muldoon from System0 on May 6, 2007

I’ve came across a few posts in the last day or so asking how technorati work out the Authority link which is displayed next to a blogs rank. It’s kinda funny to see bloggers question it and wonder what complicated formula Technorati use to work out a sites authority.

Technorati Authority Explained

The authority link is nothing new. It used to be called ‘Blogs that link here’ or something to that effect. All they have done is rename it. So if you have an authority of 20 you could have 100 incoming links or 200 or whatever but those links are all coming from just 20 other blogs. Thats all the Authority figure is.

Again, its kinda funny to see bloggers so excited about this link rename as simply clicking on the ? link next to it explains it all.

Heres how Technorati explains it : (taken from here)

The Technorati Top 100 shows the most popular 100 blogs based on Technorati Authority. The #1 ranked blog is the blog with the most other distinct blogs linking to it in the last 6 months. If your blog’s rank is, say 305,316, this indicates that there are 305,315 blog ranks separating your blog from the #1 position.

The best way to increase your Technorati Authority is to write things that are interesting to other bloggers so they’ll link to you. Linking to source material when you blog is also a great way to engage in conversation and help others find what you find interesting.
