Kevin MuldoonBasic Bad Word Censor for your Wordpress Comments

Written by Kevin Muldoon from System0 on April 23, 2007

I was on SitePoint today and i saw a request for a censor for wordpress that highlights rude/offensive words whilst the user is still writing the comment. Such add ons are available in the phpbb community apparently.

ses5909 from I Love Code posted a link to a new plugin called WP-Noshit. It claims to be a plugin that allows for filtering of badwords used during commenting. It doesn’t censor during typing and from looking at the code it’s a very very basic script. However, it does exactly what it says on the tin. All you need to do is add the words you dont want used in the plugin (eg f*@k etc) either via the plugin text editor or instead in a regular text editor before uploading the file.

Once the plugin is activiated, any comments which have the ‘bad words’ you specified will be replaced with ***. As i said, its a very simple plugin but if you find some commentators are occasionally using bad words it could be a very simple way of dealing with rude words and letting readers know swearing wont be tolerated.
